Why are we so afraid to speak our mind?

I think it is a morality and ethics thing. We are taught:

Don’t speak up. Don’t be too loud. Don’t disturb others. Be small, quiet, humble, meek, and take up as little space as possible.

For myself, I find this very anti-human and very anti-natural. Isn’t humanity about growth, power augmentation, and becoming more?
