How to Advertise Yourself as a Photographer

selfie ERIC KIM red eye

We typically think about advertising as a bad thing. However, to advertise yourself means to simply market yourself, or to put yourself out there. The sole purpose of advertising isn’t always to make money, but often to simply promote a certain message, idea, or your images.

1. What is your intended goal?

The first thought: what is your end goal? Is it to get clients and make money? Or is it to propagate yourself, your ideas, and your photography artwork? Also, how do you measure or gauge success for yourself?

2. Multi modal media

Or another words, use audio, video, and text. Write blog posts as text, share photos, make podcasts, and make video and YouTube videos.

Why does multi modal approach? It is because there are some individuals like myself who prefer to read text, others who prefer to listen to podcasts, and others who prefer to watch videos. If you do it all, your audience doesn’t have an excuse not to be exposed to your message.

How to judge your photos

3. It is all about you

You are the platform. You are the brand. The goal isn’t to promote others and other brands, and get a brand partnership or whatever, but it is to best promote yourself. Your ideas, your philosophies, your aesthetics, your ideas.

4. Become more opinionated

The cardinal sin of the Internet is to be boring —to not have an opinion. The reason why I don’t like a lot of people on the Internet nowadays is that everyone lacks an opinion. It is all about reviews of things and products, very little original thoughts and opinions from individuals.

Better to be polarizing in your opinion, than to not have one.
