Making Money for Fun, Not to Get Rich
Epiphany:
The point of making money ain’t to get rich… it is just to keep score, to have fun!
Money is like points in a video game. And you are the hero of your own video game in life!
No, we’re not living in a simulation
No, you’re not living in the matrix. But in some ways, we are living in a metaphorical matrix. For example:
- Our belief in ‘fiat currency‘ (paper money, dollars, etc doesn’t inherently have value. It is simply a faith in money, or the faith in the government).
- Our faith in the government and institutions. What is real? You. Flesh. Human beings. Abstract notions like ‘the state’, ‘government’, and ‘society’ are man-made constructions. They aren’t real or physical. They are simply notions connected by human beings.
In this metaphorical matrix of capitalism-consumerism, how do we keep score? Money is points.
Money isn’t real. Money is just embodied human-trust.
Why make money?
The sucker mistake–
Thinking that by earning more money, you will feel more safe and secure.
This ain’t real. Consider all the billionaires scared shitless right now during COVID. Money cannot buy you peace of mind. Only the strength of your body and mind can.
Moneta
Where does the notion of money come from? Money — ‘moneta‘, another name for the goddess Juno, and it was the name of the temple where money (coins) were created/minted.
Coins came before paper money
If we read the Iliad, this is what I learned:
Back then there was no notion of “money” or “currency”.
Wealth was measured in gold, slaves, cattle (oxen), and rare things. Now we go ga-ga over dollar bills and perhaps Bitcoin/Crypto, but once again– currency is just a medium of exchange and trust between human-beings, in exchange for labor.
Conclusion
Don’t stake your own self-worth on your bank account. Retire now. What does it mean to retire?
To no longer make the purpose of your life about money-accumulation.
We’re currently living in an experimental ‘universal basic income‘, which means you only need money for two things:
- Paying rent
- Buying meat
Everything else is superfluous.
