Dear friend,

A realization:

Entrepreneurship is about attempting; trying, testing your limits– less about the results.

I really like the French word ‘essay’, which literally means to ‘attempt’.

The reason I like the notion of an attempt is this:

It is more focused on your effort, and your personal courage in taking a risk; less focused on the results of your attempt.

I also like the word ‘attempt’, because it is also humble in the sense that it doesn’t necessarily mean you will succeed. In-fact, most great attempts you make will fail; but it is your courage in attempting is what makes you grand!

Attempt more.

Let me give you an example:

With deadlifting or powerlifting, it is about having the courage to attempt higher weights.

With powerlifting, I constantly test my limits. I constantly push my past personal records; to keep pushing myself to the next level.

The most important thing is the attempt. When you attempt anything, you have to give it 110% of your effort. Furthermore, you cannot have any ounce of doubt in your mind. If you doubt yourself even a single ounce, you will ‘psych’ yourself out.

For example, last week I deadlifted 435 pounds (once). This week I attempted 440 pounds, and only got it up half-way.

Technically if you’re obsessed about “proper form”, you would say I failed– because I failed to get the bar all the way up to my waist.

Just focus on the courage and attempt

But for myself, I don’t really care whether I succeed or fail. I am more interested in whether I have the courage to attempt more!

Because this is the truth with weight lifting:

Once you reach a new PR (personal record) in terms of your strength, it is a bit anti-climatic.

Thus, my epiphany is:

Disregard success or failure; focus on attempting more!

BE BOLD!
