PHOTOGRAPHY ENTREPRENEURSHIP 101

A lot of us, myself included, waited until we got “discovered.” We have pipe dreams of having someone “discover” our talent.

Preface.

I remember as a kid, I would stand in a line and wait to get “picked” for the kickball team. When I was a fat kid at age 11, I was often chosen last. That shit hurt.

One.

I always wanted to become “famous” in my photography, to get admiration for my photos.

But I sat and waited. Nobody ever chose me. Nobody picked me to get a magazine feature. Nobody gave me a book deal.

One day, I figured:

What if I build a blog, and I can interview other photographers?

To me, this was a great idea. I knew how it sucked not being chosen. I wanted to build a platform to help promote other talented photographers. And funny enough, it became a good selfish strategy. Why? The more I interviewed other photographers, the more I built my name. And now, ERIC KIM is all on the brain of the web, even though a lot of people think he is insane.

Two.

Pick yourself. Don’t second doubt yourself.

Build your own magazine. Print your own zine. Self publish your own photo book.

Build your own empire. Start your own website.

Start your own printing company, like Cindy did with HAPTIC PRESS. You can never build wealth if you don’t have 100% control over your shit.

Even now, I don’t wait until companies front me to offer me to teach workshops or give talks. I just go out and do them.

Three.

The benefits of owning yourself and choosing yourself: you have more control over your fate.

You build equity in yourself. You build your own name.

Don’t you want to promote your own name, not the name of others, or other companies?

Four.

How do you choose or pick yourself?

Decide:

I ain’t gonna sit on the sidelines, and wait until someone chooses me. Rather, I’m gonna invent my own game, and choose myself as the MVP.

Start your own business of yourself.
