Surpass Yourself
Life is boring when you’re standing still. Life is far more fun when you never stop going beyond yourself, and never stop surpassing yourself. And I learned from the students from my last Berlin workshop, the German phrase: “Jump over your own shadow!”#shadowjumpers
Why surpass yourself?
A life of (steady and slow) yet constant gains is the best life. When you have the strong feeling and faith that your life is “on the up and up”. This is what gives us drive, motivation, and optimism for the future — for us to constantly push ourselves to new heights, and for us to becoming more and more daring to try the forbidden or dangerous.
How to surpass yourself
You essentially use your past self (yourself a week ago) as your benchmark. For powerlifting, I try to add 5 pounds to my maximum “one rep max”per week. Perhaps we can also track our weekly progression when it comes to our photographic production, our artistic production, and entrepreneurial innovations.
Don’t compare yourself with others; only against your past self.
This is the biggest vice we fall victim to — comparing ourselves with others, instead of comparing ourselves with our past selves.
Philosophically you can only become yourself, and you should only desire to become a more advanced version of yourself. Thus the goal is simple:
Never stop becoming a more epic and braver version of yourself!
