Real Photographers Don’t Use Instagram

A thought:

Real photographers don’t use Instagram. Why? Their self-esteem is robust. They don’t care for the approval of others. They just make photos to please themselves, and share the few that they like (in a form that they can control which is not digital share-cropping).

Real photographers will typically share their photos and portfolio on their website, blog, in prints, publications, e-books, print books, etc.

Certainly you can use Instagram if you would like.

I am convinced– the best way to improve your self-esteem and innovation in photography is ‘via negativa’ which means:

Figure out what to *NOT* do in photography or figure out the superfluous stuff to get rid of.

For example:

  1. Disable the stats, website traffic information/etc on your website-blog.
  2. Delete Instagram. I still think that Facebook is a ‘net positive’ for society, for Facebook Groups, the new integration with Oculus Rift, as well as Facebook Messenger.

What happens

What happens when you use Instagram?

Your photos become more generic and more boring over time.

Why? The low-key bias is:

How can I maximize my likes and viewer and follower counts?

This means:

  1. You become a slave to the algorithm
  2. Your photos strive to placate the masses (mass-popularity is generally a sign of failure, because all good things are rare (the rare for the rare). Consider if everyone wore a Rolex Watch or drove a Lamborghini, it would not be cool. If we thought that numbers were the key to success, then McDonalds would be considered the ‘best’ “restaurant” (it isn’t).

Simple solution:

Make a blog!
