Who is programming the algorithm? Are you programming the algorithm, or is the algorithm programming you?

How it works

Simple:

The algorithm is optimized towards maximal engagement and clicks. Thus too much of anything is bad, and too controversial of anything is bad. Anything which is unique is bad.

For example, with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or whatever, the algorithm is programmed this way:

Best to post only once a day (at least once a day, but not several times a day), have a bright visual, and have it about a common subject a lot of people are interested in.

But what if you’re interested in something more obscure, like the philosophy of physiology? Or deeper truths about things? Then you’re not gonna perform well according to the algorithm.

What is the problem with algorithms?

It fucks up self esteem. It makes people become a prisoner to views. It favors mediocrity. It favors the average, the mean, the herd.

Give people what you THINK they ‘should’ have, rather than what they say they want.

Consider– if we let children simply do as they pleased, they would probably only be eating Twinkies or Hot Pockets all day. Same with adults; most adults (if they could) would probably just be on Netflix all day, smoking weed, hiking, and stuff like that.

We as creators are hard. We are kinda mini tyrants in a way. We create what we think people *SHOULD* think they need (Steve Jobs mentality) rather than doing ‘market research’ and creating mediocre things. There is no true innovation by committee; you need a singular individual with extreme visionary thoughts.

Just follow your own gut

So what should you create? Just follow your own curiosity. Just create what you would like to see manifested in the world!
