Businesses and tax-exempt organizations that buy a qualified commercial clean vehicle may qualify for a clean vehicle tax credit of up to $40,000 under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) 45W.  The credit equals the lesser of:

• 15% of your basis in the vehicle (30% if the vehicle is not powered by gas or diesel)
• The incremental cost of the vehicle

The maximum credit is $7,500 for qualified vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) of under 14,000 pounds and $40,000 for all other vehicles.

Who Qualifies

Businesses and tax-exempt organizations qualify for the credit. 

There is no limit on the number of credits your business can claim. For businesses, the credits are nonrefundable, so you can’t get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. A 45W credit can be carried over as a general business credit.

Vehicles That Qualify

To qualify, a vehicle must be subject to a depreciation allowance, with an exception for vehicles placed in service by a tax-exempt organization and not subject to a lease.

The vehicle must also: 

• Be made by a qualified manufacturer as defined in IRC 30D(d)(1)(C). See our index of qualified manufacturers
• Be for use in your business, not for resale
• Be for use primarily in the United States
• Not have been allowed a credit under sections 30D or 45W

In addition, the vehicle must either be:

• Treated as a motor vehicle for purposes of title II of the Clean Air Act and manufactured primarily for use on public roads (not including a vehicle operated exclusively on a rail or rails); or
• Mobile machinery as defined in IRC 4053(8) (including vehicles that are not designed to perform a function of transporting a load over a public highway)

The vehicle or machinery must also either be:

• A plug-in electric vehicle that draws significant propulsion from an electric motor with a battery capacity of at least:
  • 7 kilowatt hours if the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is under 14,000 pounds
  • 15 kilowatt hours if the GVWR is 14,000 pounds or more; or
• A fuel cell motor vehicle that satisfies the requirements of IRC 30B(b)(3)(A) and (B).

How to Claim the Credit

You will need to provide your vehicle’s VIN along with the amount of the credit.

The depreciable basis of the vehicle is reduced by the amount of the commercial clean vehicle credit you receive.

The Section 179 deduction is a U.S. tax code provision that allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying assets purchased or financed during the tax year. This means that if a business buys or leases qualifying property, it can deduct the full purchase price from its gross income. The provision is designed to encourage businesses to buy equipment and invest in themselves by offering an upfront tax relief instead of spreading the deduction over the life of the asset through depreciation.

As of my last update in April 2023, the Section 179 deduction had certain limits. For the tax year 2023, the deduction limit was $1,080,000, and the phase-out threshold started at $2,700,000. This means that the deduction begins to decrease on a dollar-for-dollar basis for purchases exceeding the phase-out threshold, and it completely phases out once purchases reach $3,780,000. These amounts are adjusted annually for inflation, so it’s important to check the current year’s limits.

Qualifying property includes tangible personal property such as machinery and equipment, off-the-shelf computer software, and certain vehicles. It also covers improvements to nonresidential real property like roofs, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, fire protection, alarm systems, and security systems.

There are specific conditions and requirements to qualify for the Section 179 deduction, including business use percentage and the type of business entity. It’s also important to note that the total amount of the Section 179 deduction cannot exceed the taxable income of the business; however, any amount not deductible in the current year can be carried forward to future years.

Given the strategic value of this deduction for businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, it’s an excellent tool for managing cash flow and reducing the tax burden. It encourages businesses to invest in their growth and operational efficiency. Entrepreneurs and innovators can leverage this deduction to offset the upfront cost of purchasing new equipment or software, effectively reducing the overall cost of investments that could drive their business forward.

• Adjusted Gross Income (“AGI”) limitations
• MSRP price caps

Customers who take delivery of a qualified new Tesla vehicle and meet all federal requirements are eligible for a tax credit up to $7,500, which can be deducted from the purchase price at time of delivery for eligible cash or loan purchases through Tesla. The following models currently qualify for federal tax credits for eligible buyers who meet all other federal requirements (including AGI limitations):

• Model X: $80,000
• Model Y: $80,000

• Glendale Water and Power residential customers can receive up to $599 for installing a home charger. Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.
• King City CCA provides two EV-specific energy rates for home charging.
• Eligible Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) customers may receive a rebate of up to $1,000 for the purchase and installation of a qualified Level 2 (240-volt) charging station and a $250 rebate for the installation of a dedicated EV meter. Customers participating in LADWP’s Lifeline or EZ-SAVE Low-Income Customer Assistance (EZ-SAVE) Program are eligible for an additional $500 rebate.
  Note: The Tesla Wall Connector with proprietary Tesla connector is not eligible for a rebate. However, Tesla drivers are eligible to apply for a charging station rebate if they purchase the Tesla J1772 charging station.
• Marin Clean Energy provides customers a $3,500 rebate for newly purchased and leased EVs, and lower rates for off-peak home EV charging.
• The City of Pasadena offers residents a rebate up to $250 when they purchase or lease a new or used plug-in EV and an additional $1,000 for those enrolled in an income-qualifying PWP program.
• Clean Power Alliance offers EV-specific energy rates for home charging.
• Pasadena Water and Power customers can receive up to $1,250 rebate for buying/leasing an EV, and businesses can receive up to $50,000 for installing public EV chargers.
  Residential electric customers are eligible for a $600 rebate when they install a qualifying Wi-Fi enabled EV charger at their home, or a $200 rebate when they install a standard (Non Wi-Fi) EV charger. Income eligible participants can earn up to $1,500.
• Pioneer Community Energy offers two EV-specific energy rates for home charging.
• Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing allows property owners to borrow funds to pay for energy improvements, including purchasing and installing EVSE.The borrower repays over a defined period of time through a special assessment on the property. Local governments in California are authorized to establish PACE programs. Property owners must agree to a contractual assessment on the property tax bill, have a clean property title, and be current on property taxes and mortgages. Financing limits are 15% of the first $700,000 of the property value and 10% of the remaining property value.
• San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District offers a rebate up to $3,000 for eligible customers.
• San Jose Community Energy offers EV-specific energy rates for home charging.
• Incentive of up to $4,000 for purchase of a used EV for low income San Mateo residents.
• Silicon Valley Clean Energy provides residential and commercial rates for EV charging.
• Sonoma Clean Power customers can apply for a reimbursement of a smart electric vehicle Level 2 charger.

What is insanely great customer service?

I had this insanely terrible experience at this one Lululemon in Century City mall Westfield, one of the store managers, maybe a mid 20s or early 30s short Caucasian woman, giving me the up-and-down, and thinking that my Lululemon license to train shorts, were an old model. This was bad for many reasons.

First — a customer service representative should always assume that the customer might be a major investor or a very important person. I pulled up to this century city Lululemon in my all army attire, as it was raining. I think she gave me the one up and down and thought that I was a poor person. A store manager like this deserves a reprimand from corporate or maybe even their job revoked. Even one bad experience with a store manager might cost a customer for life, and even worse… Invoking the rage of a highly influential person which might discourage thousands of people from ever purchasing the brand ever again.

To switch it up, I pulled up to the Lululemon store in Santa Monica at 3rd St., Promenade, best customer service in my life. I went to one of the customer representatives, his name was Daje Barbour and he gave me the best experience in my life. I showed him the license to train shorts that I had, which had a broken zipper, and he said that with broken zippers, you just get a product exchange, no need to send it in to get repaired. As a consequence he quickly said that he would just give me one from the store inventory, and I told him that it was a 5 inch model not the 7 inch model which was in stock, he offered to ship it to me at my home address with no extra cost!

Also, he gave me a gift card and told me that if for any reason that my replacement unit was not sent in, the balance, in total including taxes like around $97 USD we debited to this gift card.

This was critical for many reasons:

1. First, I spent $88 USD on these pair of shorts, brand new. That is a lot of money for a pair of shorts, and the customer client base of myself is interesting; if a brand is really good and offers insanely great customer service, I will keep purchasing the brand and recommending it to Everyone I know including my tens and thousands of followers. If not hundreds of thousands. If not more than that.

Best customer service at this Lululemon in third street promenade Santa Monica, of my life. DAJE BARBOUR deserves a raise! Extremely professional, approachable, gave me 10 stars out of 10 star service. Makes me want to use this brand forever.

1. Would you drive or own the Lamborghini if nobody knew that it was a Lamborghini? That is, you got rid of all the badges, styling etc., and you just liked it for the sake of itself and its own aesthetics?
