STREET PHOTOGRAPHY STARTER KIT

Hyper low composition

Get super super low, and shoot looking up. Use a flash. Use this ‘off-kilter’ composition as a guide. Putting your subject in a corner, instead of dead-center.

UNCLEAR/OBSCURE

Compositions are often better when you photograph people through unclear surfaces– like foggy glass, obscured materials, etc. This awakens our imagination– and makes us wonder:

I wonder what the person looks like?

Also, it makes the photo more open-ended if you cannot see the person’s face.

Also, if you cannot see the subject’s face, then the subject becomes more of a symbol or a metaphor; they become a concept, not just a single person.

Assert yourself in your photo and scene

Don’t just be a passive viewer. Be an active participant of your scene! Interact with your subjects, talk with them, engage with them, and become one with the scene!

Layered subjects

When you see a group of subjects, shoot it! Ideally you want this in street photography layers:

A little bit of separation between your subjects.

I also like street photography layers with eye contact.

Get to a high perspective

Climb up high. Either go on a freeway overpass, perhaps a skyscraper, and shoot looking down!

Make the subject very small

As a fun game, try to make the subject of your photo as small as possible, while still retaining the image!
