Society Photography, Not “Street” Photography

Turbo thought:

Perhaps it isn’t ‘street’ photography we are doing, but *society* photography.

The difference?

When we talk about street photography, what I think we’re trying to talk about is society photography. Because what is society? It is interaction and engagement with other human beings.

Even when we think about money and commerce, what is money? It is societal technology. Money as the glue which holds humans together.

We love to be society people

So what is it about Street photography which is so great and fun? It is because we love being part of society. If COVID-19 has taught me anything, it is that when people do not interact with society people get depressed.

The more we engage with society, the happier we are.

What is so fun about going to coffee shops and restaurants and bars? It is not the food or drink itself, it is the interaction with other people. To rub shoulders with others, even if you’re introverted. There’s a great joy of being surrounded by other human beings.

This is why people tend to be the most depressed on Sundays. Because nobody any longer goes to church, people are stuck at home by themselves. People think that they be happier by themselves, but in fact, in part of society in a community is what makes people feel a sense of belonging and joy.
