How to Edit and Sequence a Photography Project

From SUITS:

In media res

When you create your story, start somewhere in the middle. Start where the action is!

How should the story go?

Does the order of your photography project matter? Depends. Ask yourself:

What kind of story are you trying to tell?

Visual consistency

It seems visual consistency is important. Same camera, same lens, same film or processing style.

Follow your gut.

To edit and sequence your photography project is more poetry than empirical science. All stories can be told in different ways.

When I worked with Cindy and Annette Kim on my SUITS hard cover edition, the goal was simple:

Make a robust and strong book which will last through the cruel teeth of time.

To edit and sequence I used my iPad to create a folder and would move around the images. Also, I used Indesign to sequence and layout photos with Cindy.

In praise of Digital portfolios

Digital portfolios are great. Why? You can always change, evolve it, and change it!

Conclusion

  1. Just follow your gut
  2. Never stop editing and evolving your project
  3. When are you done with a project? When you die.
