10 Street Photography Tips

Street thoughts on my mind:

1. Minus exposure compensation

The darker you go, the more interesting your street photos. -1, -2, or -3 exposure compensation (RICOH GR III) in high contrast black and white seems to work magic.

My mantra:

As dark as possible (ADAP).

2. Tilt your camera (dutch angle)

Tilting your camera is very effective. It makes your photos more dynamic.

To shoot just straight is boring. Tilt your photos more (dutch angle).

3. The fishing technique

Very simple. Find a simple background, and wait for someone to enter the photo. Minus exposure compensation, to get the silhouette of your subject.

4. Work the scene

Don’t just shoot 1 photo. Work the scene.

Interact with you subject more, ask more open ended questions, and click while you’re talking to them.

5. Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition:

Find an interesting contrast or open-ended story behind your subject.

For example, the juxtaposition between your subject and an advertisement in the background.

6. Work the corner

Look for the leading lines and the vanishing point of a corner.

7. Photograph abstracts

Don’t just be constrained by shooting photos of people in candid situations. Also look for abstracts to photograph.

8. Play and have fun

If you ain’t having fun when shooting street photography, you’re doing something wrong.

When do we fail the most in street photography? When we take it too seriously.

9. Chase the light

Half the fun in street photography is chasing the light. Specifically try to shoot much during golden hour (sunrise and sunset). Even monochrome renders so much more beautifully during epic light!

10. The never ending journey

Keep shooting, testing yourself and testing your limits. When does your street photography journey end? Simple, when you die at age 120!!!

SHOOT ON!
