Why New?

Why do we like the new?

We currently exist in the world of the new, the cult of the new. We like new clothes, new cars, new phones, new devices, and new things. But why?

One theory I have is that it is novelty which drives us human beings. If we were easily satisfied with the same old thing, we would still be in the cave munching on acorns. The desire of hunger and lust for the new, new places, new adventures is what has helped humans multiply in traverse the globe. Therefore, the root and seed of innovation and entrepreneurship is the hunger for the new.

Yet my critique is when consumerism is driving our lust for novelty and the new, rather than creating the new. For example, far more virtuous for you to channel your desire for the new in order to go on new adventures, new travels, new hikes, new walks, and to make new photos, make new artworks, and write out new ideas. Also, our disdain with the old is what helps us innovate and create new technologies, platforms, services, and products which we wish to see manifest in the world.

Therefore my take away is this: rather than buying the new, let us strive to create the new.
