ERIC KIM CRITIQUE OF ROMANTICISM

romanticism

Something that I have thought about a long time:

Why do we have a romanticism of the past, specifically … ‘retro’ things?

Romanticism as a sign of degeneration

The closest notion of ‘romanticism’ I got is from Nietzsche:

That the best was in the past, and things will never become ‘better’.

Why this love for the past?

I think to find gratitude for the past is good. After all, much wisdom from the past masters.

However this is where we go wrong:

When we think that the past is *SUPERIOR* to the present (and the future).

Don’t be stuck in the past.

For example, this romanticism for classic cars, or even Leica M Rangefinder cameras. The superficial hipster notion that:

Modern is lame.

In fact, the best is yet to come. This is the best way to approach and live life.

Furthermore:

Think that your past self was *inferior* to your present self, and that your artistic/creative production of the past is *less* than it is today.

The great optimism towards the future

With photography, your artwork, your creative vision, your bodily physiology, your facial morphology, etc … always think:

The best is yet to come.
