THE PHILOSOPHY OF PROGRESS

What is ‘progress’? And why does this matter, and is this what we are striving towards?

What is ‘progress’?

Progressus‘ in Latin — to advance. ‘Progredior’ (to step, walk forward). To march forth, to proceed.

Disdain for the past?

Inherent in this notion of progress is:

Looking at the past, and having disdain for it.

Rather, more joy and hope for the FUTURE.

Why progress?

So the big question:

*WHY* progress?

My thought —

Life is predicated on the notion of progress.

To take the work of our ancestors, and to add to it. To make the past more full, to see a more glorious and beautiful future.

seneca composition

Why our pre-occupation with the past?

Perhaps our obsession with the past is a sign of weakness. A sign that —

In the past, everything was ‘better’ (a degenerate ‘Romantic’ notion).

Why the past? The past is solid, and immutable. Thus we find refuge in the past. Perhaps even nostalgia is a vice.

The future will be more beautiful and more glorious

composition Cindy seneca

We must never think:

I wish things were back to the way things *USED* to be.

Rather —

Wow, the past was so much worse than now. I am much happier now and today, and I am far more interested and exciting in the future I will pave!
