BECOME YOUR OWN STANDARD.

Thinking about 007 and John Wick, and certain aesthetic standards that we are inspired by and desire to emulate.

Why do we see others as the standard?

Same thing as when we look at famous people, celebrities, and notable individuals. We want to dress how they dress, act like how they act, think like how they think, emulate their morning routine, eat the same food they do, and drink the same things they drink.

But isn’t it better for us to create our own standards, and maybe one day somebody else could aspire to become us instead?

Is it an issue of courage?

When I was a kid growing up, there were certain clothes, brands, and aesthetic styles which were considered cool.

Now as adults, the same persists. We only desire to buy certain things, because other famous or notable or influential people have them.

For example, why do we want Leica M rangefinders? Because that is what Henri Cartier Bresson shot with. We think we could become Henri Cartier Bresson by using the same tools and equipment as him. But then perhaps some more important question we should be asking ourselves is this: should we aspire to become like Henri Cartier Bresson? Is he really the standard we should aspire to?

I say it’s better that we aspire to our own standard. We create our own standard and strive to become more unique, we disdain looking like anybody else, and we strive to become more unique more different from others. Individuation.
