  • Lessons I’ve Learned from Jeff Bezos Invent and Wander Book

I just finished Invent and Wander by Jeff Bezos, which is a collection of his annual shareholder letters, as well as some personal essays/speeches he’s given. Insanely good — some lessons I learned:

The first thing that I learned which was really quite inspiring is just how much crazy turmoil Jeff Bezos was able to endure. For example, learning that at the height of the Internet bubble, Amazon was worth $109 a share, and then plummeted to six dollars a share. Ouch. (as said by Jeff). The reason why this was so inspiring was that during that period, so many of these loser pundits predicted the failure of Amazon. Even one fool said that Barnes & Noble would eat Amazons breakfast.

Another thing I love learning was in fact, Jeff Bezos was quite self-made. Also learning that his mom had him when she was 17 years old, and would actually attend her college classes with Jeff, as a young child, with two backpacks. One backpack full of her books, and the second book full of diapers and toys to entertain Jeff during class.

Also something inspiring is when he talks about his father, not his biological father, but his “real” father. How his father was a Cuban immigrant to America, and because his fathers mom thought that America would be cold, she sewed him a jacket made out of spare cleaning rags, the only material she had access to. Apparently they still have that jacket in their living room.

Also, the notion of day one. The idea that every day is day one, which gives you the motivation and spirit to always be scrappy and hungry. To not sit on your laurels.

Oh also a practical thing is that apparently him and his wife let their kids play with sharp knives ever since they were four years old, and let them play with power tools when they were nine years old. His wife apparently said to naysayers, “I would rather have a resourceful kid with nine fingers, than a kid with 10 fingers who is not resourceful”.

The more I read the rhetoric on sustainability stuff, it seems to just be superficial, and smoke and mirrors for big companies or corporations to seem like good guys.

  • Maybe oculus, quest, virtual reality, and meta is a good idea

I recently read the headline that Facebook/meta-lost about $21 billion this year investing in Meta, the metaverse, quest and virtual reality. But assuming that Facebook is a 1 trillion dollar company, technically $21 billion is actually not that much money. Also, Mark Zuckerberg is the only person around my age who has founded his company, and stuck with it, and still remains CEO. Much respect to him. Like Jeff Bezos says, Mark Zuckerberg isn’t a missionary who just wanted to build a company, flip it, take a public and make a bunch of money and peace out. Instead he is a missionary, somebody who doesn’t really care for money, but a greater vision.

Perhaps virtual reality, the meta-verse, etc. is a bad idea. But, it is a more fun risky entrepreneurial endeavor to try to build out that space, instead of sticking to the old boring Facebook/Instagram traditional social media approach.

  • Anti Stasis

  • A Critique of the iPhone

The other day I went to an Apple store, and I am so insanely disappointed. Why? All of the new products are lame, boring, and uninteresting. All of the colorways are lame, they are far too many categories of products now, Apple has lost her initial vision, ala Steve Jobs and Jony Ive.

A really big critique is the iPhone, which is supposed to be humankind’s most important tool. The iPhone Pro has become insanely lame. After using my iPhone SE for so long, and also Cindy‘s iPhone mini, I am insanely shocked to see just how big, bulky, and ugly the iPhone Pro is. Also, even the new deep purple color only went halfway; the color should have been bolder. Even up close, it is difficult to differentiate between the deep purple and the space gray.

My personal vision for the iPhone, or the iPhone pro is the device which is actually the smallest, thinnest, and lightest. A real iPhone Pro is not a camera. An iPhone Pro should rather be like a super mega computer, like an iPad Pro mini mini.

What should the phone be for? My personal vision is that a phone should be your new computer. It should be so light, so unobtrusive, so thin, it should just disappear into your hand. It should just be extension of you.

The hilarity is that 99.9% of people just use their iPhone Pro to text message. And the funny thing that I’ve discovered is the bigger, bulkier and heavier the phone, the more difficult it is to text, and also reduces your texting productivity. The most productive iPhone is the smallest and lightest, either the iPhone SE or the iPhone Mini.

Also from a productivity perspective, any device which is bigger and more powerful but heavier is worse for productivity. Why? Even with the laptop, the biggest benefit of a laptop is that you could just seamlessly move it around so easily. Therefore, your overall productivity will be higher on the MacBook Air than it is on a heavier MacBook Pro. Why? Easier to slip the MacBook Air into your bag or backpack, go to the local coffee shop, or even just move around the house. The heavier 14 inch MacBook Pro is kind of a bizarre device; if it is that big and powerful, you’re probably not gonna move it, so isn’t it better to just get a desktop computer instead? A Mac Mini or maybe the new Mac Studio?

  • How to Build Your Power

I had a funny thought that instead of thinking of myself as a bodybuilder, or a powerlifter, better for me to think of myself as a “powerbuilder“, that is, my joy and aim is to keep building my power.

Why do I not like the notion of being a “powerlifter“? Because I don’t compete. I don’t want to be put into that category. Also, I do not want to just be restricted to three lifts.

Also from a metaphorical perspective, I like the idea of powerbuilding. That our ultimate end goal in life is to keep building our power. Not for some evil ends, but rather, toward some virtuous ends. I want to become the powerman.

  • Ugly aesthetics are physiologically depressing

If you have beautiful aesthetics, does it physiologically uplift and empower you? Not 100% sure, but I could say that ugly aesthetics are positively negatively physiologically depressing. Ugly aesthetics can take away your physiological power.

  • Why is Brazil so good at soccer?

Currently watching the Brazil versus Korea soccer/football game, and I thought that comes to my mind; why is it that Brazil is so good at soccer?

The first thought, ethnic diversity. It is much beneficial to get the best out of all worlds, regardless of ethnic group, background, race, etc. Whereas the downside of Korea is that everyone is so racially homogenous. In the realm of sports, ethnic diversity is best.

Another theory is about scrappiness. Certainly South Korea has a higher GDP and economic strength than Brazil. However, perhaps the big benefit of soccer/football in Brazil is that all kids, irregardless of how rich or poor can play soccer in the streets. It is the ultimate democratic sport which just requires a single ball.

Compare this to South Korea which is so focused on education. Sports is a non-concept in Korea.

Ultimately, does it matter who is best at sports? Not really.

  • KEEP IMPROVING!

    KEEP IMPROVING!

  • How to Think

    How to Think

    Why think?

Teng— to think, to feel, to perceive, to know.

What differentiates man from beast? Our ability to think, forecast, predict, our brains, etc.

    What is a philosopher?

A philosopher is simply a thinker. Somebody who loves to think, and derives his or her happiness from thinking.

What inhibits our ability to think nowadays? Oversaturation of the news, social media, gossip, etc.

    Why think?

Is there a pragmatic or practical upside of thinking? I think so.

To think means to challenge, to question, and to ascertain certain values two things. This is essential and critical, as man is simply a value creation being. We decide and dictate what is valuable, and what is not valuable.

Think on your own two feet

In order to think, you must move. And what is the best way to move? To walk, to stand on your own two feet. The source of all of our intelligence and thinking comes from our legs, and our ability to be bipeds.

    To think more, squat more

To become a stronger thinker, strengthen your legs. Strengthen your ability to squat, squat walk, dead lift, rack pull , etc.

  • HOW TO INCREASE YOUR VIGOR

    HOW TO INCREASE YOUR VIGOR

Vigeo— thrive, flourish. Weg— to be lively, strong.

What is the source of our vigor, or where is the source of our vigor?

If you are a man, maybe it is in your testes, your balls, your testosterone, etc. Then the question is how do we naturally get our vigor and our testosterone up?

The first thought, what kills our testosterone? My theory; beer, alcohol, weed and marijuana, sugar, carbs, etc. Also, listening to too much NPR, The “woke” media, the New Yorker, etc.

Also hilariously enough, sports. I have a simple ethical thought:

One should not watch sports media of a sport that one has actually never played in their life before.

For example, if you have never played American football before in your life, you shouldn’t watch it. It is like pornography, but worse. At least watching porn gets your adrenaline up, watching sports of a sport you have never played before only invites you to consume more beer, and other things which kill your testosterone.

    Guns?

A critique of gun ownership; from a Spartan perspective, a gun might be the most cowardly weapon. Why? It doesn’t really require any hand to hand steel or courage. Any skinny fat loser, or obese person can kill you with a gun. Even the ancient Spartans saw archers as cowards. Even in the Iliad, Paris was seen as a coward, just shooting arrows from a far. The real men fight hand to hand, men to men, only with their spears and shields.

Or let us consider the movie seven samurai by Akira Kurosawa, remember when that one noble samurai was killed by that one coward hiding behind the blinds with a gun?

    How about John Wick?

I think what we love most about John Wick is how ruthless he is, and how stoic he is. John Wick is like a modern day stoic.

    Challenge, conquest

What modern day man lacks is some sort of physical challenge or courage. This is where the gym is our haven, because it is really the only place where we could practice physical courage.

    Mental courage?

Can mental courage exists without physical courage? I think not. If you have never attempted a one repetition max for a certain lift, you have no idea.

Once again, the physical courage necessary to attempt a new personal record, a new one rep max for your dead lift, your squat, etc.

  • A kid weightlifting gym?

A thought on my mind; trying to figure out virtuous ways to spend and kill time with Seneca, typically we just go to the local outdoor mall, the Irvine spectrum, and just walk around. However what I would love would be some sort of open air, or indoor outdoor gym for kids. Not one of those stupid ones with slides and stuff, but like the ancient Spartans, with weights, mini atlas stones for kids, stuff to throw around, etc.

  • Future Clothing?

In terms of the future and technology, we always think about devices like our phones our laptops or tablets our cars etc. But what would future clothes look like, and what should future clothes look like?

First of all, what is the point of clothes anyways? A simple part of it is aesthetic, which is, we want to wear clothes which we believe to reflect our own personal grandeur.

Second, the functional aspect. Like Kanye said, it is illegal to be naked outdoors. However beyond that, what is the best way to think about clothes? My thought: clothes which are the least obtrusive and obstructive to your movement.

For a very long time, I never understood why anyone would wear a vest. Didn’t it make sense to have sleeves as well? And a hood?

However, now that it is the winter months, wearing an ultra light down vest, no sleeves and no hood is insanely clutch. Why is that? It really does keep you warm, without obstructing movement in your arms and shoulders.

Then, with pants or shorts, what are the ideal pants and shorts? It seems ideal pants and shorts are once again, the least obstructive to our movement. This means that jeans are out of the picture, as they are probably one of the most restrictive to your movement.

I think this is the great innovation of yoga pants, and leggings for women, it has really liberated women to be far more mobile, rather than wearing obstructive clothing, which gets in their way.

    HOW TO BECOME A STOIC

How does one become a stoic and why become a stoic?

The first thought is try to position yourself in such a way that you interpret everything as having a hidden benefit for yourself. That life is all upside, not downside.

Second, start hypelifting. The best way to become more invincible is through lifting very very heavy weights.

Third, don’t give shit, but also don’t take shit. If you believe that somebody is giving you shit, call it out loud.

Fourth, think insanely long-term. Even with minor setbacks in life, think to yourself, in the long run, in a decade or two or three, how can this event have helped me in the long run?

A random thought; perhaps the root of all of our ambition and power is in our legs. That is, if you could squat over 700 pounds, certainly wouldn’t it give you more elevated and lofty thoughts, chutzpah, balls and courage for anything in life?

Or in other words, every day is leg day.
