Why Do You Do Photography?

Why do you do photography? Why do you make images? Why do you engage with the visual world? What do you want your viewers to get from your images?

This is the start of visual philosophy/photography philosophy (I call it ‘photolosophy‘).

Creating beautiful images

For myself, I love photography because it gives me the opportunity and the means to make beautiful images. Photography is my primary art-form creation.

Discovering more beauty and appreciation in the world

“A life unexamined isn’t a life worth living.”

Photography is great because it allows us to better examine the world around us. If it weren’t for photography, I probably wouldn’t notice so much of the beauty of the world around me!

Transforming the world

I feel that as artists, we have a lot we dislike about the world. So much of the world is ugly. But we as artists have the power to TRANSFORM reality via the camera. The photos we make become a NEW reality– a more beautiful, rich, and wholesome reality.

Photography is happiness

This is what I’ve discovered in my life:

True happiness is making art.

Making art via your photos, making art via writing, blogging– whatever it is!

To me, I love all photography. I love shooting photos, reviewing my photos, selecting my photos, processing my photos, teaching photography, and constantly learning more about photography and visual arts.

I love making photography products, photography entrepreneurship, making books, reviewing and promoting the works of others.

All of photography is great!

Is a world without photography a life worth living?

I think a world without art isn’t a world worth living in.

Thus, if we consider photography our primary visual artform– pursue photography with your greatest strength and might!
