Okay, so I studied the word “distract” again, and what it actually means is to “scatter”. So distractions are things which scatter your focus.

Now, I believe scattering your focus is a bad thing. Why?

Imagine you’re a laser: you want intense focus to concentrate your energy and the power of the sun to burn holes through steel. As humans, I think we have the power to become magnifying glasses; to take our strengths, and concentrate it so deeply that we can do anything we desire in life.

Steve Jobs had a saying:

Put a dent in the universe.

I like this. But if you desire to put a dent in the universe, can you do it if your focus and attention is scattered and weak? I don’t think so.

For example, I realized the problem of social media, news, email, phones, etc is bad because it scatters our focus. I don’t think they’re evil per-se, or inherently bad. They’re only bad if your goal is to focus, which if you’re an entrepreneur; I assume.

Our lives are short, and we have the potential energy and power to make an impact. But consider the fact that because our life, energy, and time on planet Earth is limited — what field or fields do you wish to make an impact on? How deep do you want your impact in that field to be?

For example for myself, I desired to make an impact in the field of street photography: to empower photographers to build their confidence, boldness, learn about composition, the masters, etc. I’ve done this though my free ebooks, presets, articles, YouTube videos, workshops, etc.

But now my next focus is this: entrepreneurship, innovation, and individual empowerment. It’s combining risk taking, philosophy, and practical ways of living to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

I think teaching or sharing is one of the most effective ways to make a positive change in society. Whenever I write something or make something educational, it can spread like a virus, meme, and be copied infinite times. It can go viral, and spread, and be influential and inspire and spark the motivation, minds, and hearts of others.
