Looking at the new Leica digital M10 rangefinders with fresh new eyes I now think:
Wow, the design is so boring.
The design is classic and timeless, but … boring!
Perhaps timelessness and classic aesthetics and proportions are to be discounted. Perhaps, we need a new future aesthetic — more extreme, more dense, harder, and more disdaining to please.
For example, even though I hate steroids and all the human growth hormones and artificial things in the world of bodybuilding, powerlifting, strongman, CrossFit, etc … it happened to be able to create some new beautiful “freaks”. I still find Ronnie Coleman and his physique far more interesting than the classic proportions of Arnold S.
Also even though I’m a huge fan of Porsche, I would still prefer the extreme design of a Lamborghini, even though the Porsche is probably arguably the superior car.
Thus perhaps rather than seeking the “better” or the “superior” design, choose the more extreme and insane design!
