What are your street photography camera requirements?

How to decide the perfect street photography camera for you:

What do you need out of your street photography camera?

  • Size: Small, compact, always with you.

  • Image quality: Only needs to be “good enough” to capture the emotion of a scene.

  • Settings: Don’t struggle or stress over choosing the “best”settings in street photography. Keep it simple. I recommend P (program mode) in street photography.

  • Connection: Your camera and street photography approach should allow you to connect with others, and to document everyday life. Your camera must become an extension of yourself.

  • Confidence: Your camera must be small and unobtrusive to not make you feel social anxiety when shooting street photography.

Do you already have the perfect camera for street photography?

You might already have the perfect camera for street photography, and you might know it (yet).

Also, phones make some of the best cameras for street photography.

There is no perfect camera for street photography

Realize the perfect camera for street photography doesn’t exist, because each camera has its pros and cons.

My suggestion: Seek a Street photography camera that is “80% good enough” to satisfice your needs. Don’t be a “maximizer”.

Remember, the goal is to shoot more street pictures, not stress out about your equipment.

6 reasons why I recommend one camera, one lens in street photography

I am a huge fan of the ‘zen of one camera, one lens‘ in street photography. Benefits of one camera, one lens in street photography:

  1. Gets rid of choice anxiety: fewer choices, less stress, more focus shooting.

  2. Eliminates GAS (gear acquisition syndrome)

  3. Is a creative constraint (limitations boost your creative output)

  4. Allows you to master one focal length

  5. Gives you more money to travel, explore, and spend money on experiences (true joy comes from experiences, not stuff)

  6. By having more money, you have to work less, and therefore you will have more time to shoot.

Recommended Street photography camera: RICOH GR II

RICOH GR II has pros and cons, but it still is my #1 recommendation.

Pros

  • Size: Small, fits in your front pocket.

  • Lightweight: Won’t weigh you down when shooting on the streets.

  • Low profile: Doesn’t look flashy, people are more comfortable being photographed.

  • LCD Screen: Easier to frame and compose your scene, and be more innovative with camera angles in street photography (like super low perspectives).

  • Price: Around $600 USD (cheaper than most $1,000+ cameras)

Cons

  • Lag: A little bit of shutter delay and lag.

  • Autofocus: A bit slow.

  • Price: Around $600 USD (not cheap, yet not expensive).

Final thoughts and tips for street photography cameras

  1. Buying a new camera won’t bring you happiness.

  2. Focus on experiences rather than equipment.

  3. Buy books, not gear.

  4. Photography is about what you do with your camera, not the camera you have.

  5. Be like a kid and have fun! Street photography is a unique opportunity for you to explore the world, connect with other humans, build your confidence, and have fun. Use the simplest camera, whether RICOH GR II, your phone, or the camera you already have.
