Trust Your Body More Than Your Mind

Nobody knows how our own mind works, but we better know how our body works or feels.

Does our body or mind rule us?

For example, there have been psychology tests, in which scientists measured the electrical impulse from our muscles and brains, and asked the following question:

Does our body move BEFORE our brains are conscious?

They found out that our bodies do indeed move before we think or will it.

This is pretty huge.

Why?

Because it suggests that we don’t know why we do anything.

For example, did you decide to go for a run, because your brain wanted to go for a run? Did you will it? Or perhaps your body wanted to go out for a run… and instructed your brain to will it.

Praxis Makes Perfect

Anyways, pretty theoretical stuff.

Some practical ideas:

  1. Listen to your body more. Follow your gut. For example, if you’re tired, want to sleep more, listen to your body. Value sleep, and your bodily recovery and recuperation more than getting up and forcing you to work.
  2. Don’t work on creative stuff until your body wills you to do it. My theory from Nietzsche on creativity: collect enough pollen like a bee, and when you can no longer hold in your honey, let it out.
  3. If your body procrastinates on doing something (like answering an email, dealing with some business thing), listen to your body and INTENTIONALLY PROCRASTINATE ON IT. If you really have to finish your taxes, your body will compel you to deal with it…and like the Taoist concept of “wu wei”— you will get it some (one way or another).

When in doubt, listen to your body and gut.
