Dear friend,
Reporting live from SAIGON, here is your friendly host– ERICKIM.
Act I.
I’ve been making a lot of portraits of Cindy with RICOH GR II, P mode, ISO 1600, free ERIC KIM MONOCHROME 1600 preset.
Why? I love her. I want to encapsulate my love for her in my images.
Partly, it is fun. I like to shoot “fashion” photos, with her elegant flair, and also practicing my composition. For me, composition gives me intrinsic joy. When I make a good photo with good composition, my soul feels elated.
Also I’ve been tracing some of my Saigon compositions, just for fun. I love bright colors and monochrome. I do all this on iPad and Procreate app.
Act II
I see a change. I’m blossoming as an artist and seeing art with a fresh pair of eyes.
Here is a Basquiat, one of my favorites. I love the emotion, insanity, and feeling of skitzo in the image.
I traced it to better understand the mind of Basquiat.
Life lesson: Art is the best way to relieve boredom. Also, to make art that uplifts you, that gives you a reason to live, breathe, and explore.
Also, Pablo Picasso and Cubism fascinates me. The way he collapsed perspective (something us photographers are a slave to).
I also love Picasso and his political art and statements. Famous Guernica painting:
Cubism seemed to make no sense to me at first. I traded it to better understand.
Lesson: Minimalism or lines, and encapsulating the feeling and emotion is more important than the factual image depiction (photo realism).
Assignment: Trace your favorite artwork to understand emotion and soul of the artist, and ultimately, apply it to your own art.
Act III
STREET CLUB in ERIC KIM FORUM is blooming.
Cindy made STREET CLUB to build community and to build motivation.
Week 1 went very well. Join FORUM to participate. I recommend buying STREET NOTES MOBILE EDITION.
Act IV
Annette Kim (my sister and talented artist) has been working with HAPTICPRESS x CINDYNGUYEN.
