Student Photos from my Week-long Kolkata Introduction to Design/Composition Street Photography Workshop

After an exciting and action-packed week, the Kolkata Introduction to Design/Composition Street Photography Workshop has come to an end! Unfortunately Adam was not able to join and teach, but me, Mikael, and Nick had a great time in the colorful streets of Kolkata.

For the workshop we focused on a different theme everyday, starting off the day with lecture/theory – and spending the rest of the day shooting. I am both amazed and impressed how much Mikael and Nick were able to improve during the week. Both in their photography and confidence shooting in the streets! One great thing that both of them did was when photographing the locals of Kolkata, they talked to them, laughed with them, and best of all – shared their photos with them (albeit only on the back of their LCD screens).

The first 3 days they shot in black and white, and the last 2 days they shot in color. An overview of the week:

  • Day 1: Diagonals
  • Day 2: Figure-to-ground
  • Day 3: Depth
  • Day 4: Color
  • Day 5: Anything Goes

Breathe the Streets of Venice and Verona: Introduction to Design/Composition Workshop with Adam Marelli and Eric Kim (9/17-9/22)

There are still spots open for my upcoming 5-day Design/Composition Street Photography Workshop in Venice/Verona with Adam Marelli 9/17-9/22. Adam is a phenomenal teacher, and has an incredible understanding and knowledge of design and composition. Having studied Sculpture and Photography from New York University, he has continued his education in the pursuit of art by studying at Barnstone Studios.

This will be an incredible workshop that combines inspirational and practical hands-on learning, travel, and an experience you won’t forget. Keep reading for more info!

A Secret Tradition

Come explore the sun drenched side streets of Venice & Verona in a truly unique photography workshop. We will retrace the footsteps of the “Grand Tour” which was the foundation for any serious artist in the last three hundred years. During these formative trips painters like John Singer Sargent mastered Design, Composition, and Light to transform everyday street scenes into masterful works of Art.

You and your camera will be led on a guided exploration to learn “How to See like a Master Artist.” Many of the design principles were reserved for serious artists and are never taught in photography programs. But in this special (5) day workshop (Sept 17-22), you will learn the secrets of Classical Design that pioneers like Henrì Cartier-Bresson inherited from drawing, to revolutionize the world of Photography.

Escape to the Colorful and Exotic Streets of Istanbul: Street Photography 101 Workshop with Eric Kim, Charlie Kirk, and Andrew Kochanowski

INTERESTED IN DISCOVERING ISTANBUL AND DOCUMENTING IT WITH UNFORGETTABLE PHOTOS?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Have you been cooped up behind the desk for too long?
  2. Has it been too long since you had a nice vacation?
  3. Do you love photography and travel?
  4. Do you want to walk the streets in a foreign land and have the confidence to capture images of people and places you only see in guide books and on TV?
  5. Do you want to meet other street photographers that are as equally passionate about street and travel photography who are interested in learning like you?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, I am excited to announce my upcoming street photography workshop in Istanbul. Imagine the dusty roads with the soft golden light peeking through the sky, the colorful bazaars, the lively sound of the people and music in the streets, and the beautiful mosques covering the skyline. For those of who have never visited Istanbul, it is quite unlike any place you have ever been to—and one of the best places to shoot street photography in the world.

For this unique workshop, I will be having street photographers Charlie Kirk and Andy Kochanowski as my co-teachers. This will be an incredibly interactive, comprehensive, and hands-on workshop which will be a strong primer to anyone interested in street photography or wanting to improve their current skills.

Mumbai, India Street Photography Workshop Recap (Batch 1)

Mumbai Street Photography Workshop

Hey streettogs, I am excited to say that I just finished my first batch of my Mumbai, India Street Photography Workshop! (I got two more groups to go). It was great to work with all the street photographers here, and their enthusiasm to learn was overwhelming.

Surprisingly before this workshop, there wasn’t much of a street photography scene in Mumbai. However after seeing all of the passion as well as the great talent from this first batch of the workshop, Kaushal Parikh is going to be starting an Indian Street Photographers collective. If you are interested in being considered in this group, send your portfolio to kaush_par@yahoo.co.in.

Studying the Masters: A Recap of my Intermediate Street Photography Workshop in San Diego

(With the gang at the San Diego Street Photography Workshop)

The past Intermediate Street Photography Workshop in Downtown San Diego was a blast. We studied the work of the master street photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Helen Levitt, Vivian Maier, Bruce Gilden, Elliott Erwitt and many others. Not only that, but the atmosphere of the Gas Lamp District was fantastic, especially during the nights when it started lighting up. Shooting was a blast, as protestors for the Occupy Wall Street showed up on Saturday and  a ton of people from the Little Italy festival on Sunday.

Huge thanks to all the participants for getting out of their comfort zones and really getting close and intimate with your subjects. It was a wonderful pleasure having you Doug, Michael, Victor, Animesh, Joel, and Derriel. Huge thanks to Todd for helping with all the logistics and getting the hotel room! You are an incredible group of street photographers, and seeing your progress and images truly impressed me.

LA Street Photography Workshop: Day 1 (Street Photography Fun + Leica Orgy)

I am glad to announce that my first day of the street photography workshop was a huge success! Everything went off without a hitch, and the workshop has been great so far! We had a wonderful group of participants for the workshop and great food (courtesy of my mom and younger sister). Not only did we have a great time discussing about street photography and learning tips and techniques for the street, we were able to go out and test some Leica gear when we went shooting.

Many of the participants were able to test out Leica cameras such as the Leica M9, Leica X1, Leica D-Lux 5, and I had the great pleasure of playing with the Leica S2. All I have to say it is a beautiful camera (although a behemoth). The image-quality is unparalleled (it’s hard to tell on the web) and felt solid in my hands. It isn’t an ideal camera for street photography and was difficult to use in the streets, but it was fun.

Also I am going to have my next Intermediate Street Photography Workshop in Los Angeles on August 27-28th. Please email me at erickimphotography@gmail.com if you’re interested or would like more details!

Just landed in Beirut, Lebanon!

Update: Photos available here on Facebook.

"Setting Up" - Beirut, Lebanon
"Setting Up" - Beirut, Lebanon

Hey guys,

Just wanted to update you on my travel in Beirut, Lebanon. After 5 hours waiting at LAX, 11 hours on a flight from LAX to London, a 5 hour layover in London, and a 7 hour plane trip from London to Beirut, I have finally landed in Beirut, Lebanon. My flight arrived about an hour later than expected, but it was a great pleasure meeting my host Mohamad Bahr and Thomas Leuthard at the airport. I was a bit worried that they wouldn’t be able to find me at the airport, but then I realized that I am probably the only Asian in Lebanon (so it was really easy).

After landing down, Mohamad took Thomas and I to one of the downtown districts where I had some of the most amazing Lebanese street food. They were chicken skewers marinated in Garlic, roasted over a charcoal fire, then wrapped with some sauces I am not quite sure what they are. Regardless, they were delicious beyond belief. After downing a Pepsi as well, we hit the streets and walked around at 12AM in the morning.

Beirut definitely has a fascinating vibe and soul to it. It reminds me a lot of Seoul, Korea–with the narrow streets and the tall buildings. In the area that we were shooting, there were many art/movie posters plastered all over the walls, which gave the area a very artsy feel. Not only that, but the city was hustling and bustling with cars and people in the street. It truly felt alive.

Anyways, we arrived at Mohamad’s place, and after a nice little chat with him and Thomas, I passed out and am currently writing this at 10:09AM in the morning, waiting on one of our friends here to get us traditional Lebanese breakfast.

For the record, my workshop here is going to be from Saturday to Sunday, and there are already quite a bit of people signed up on Facebook. I am quite excited to do my presentation, and I am sure it will be a great learning experience as well. I already feel the warmth and love of the Lebanese people, and my stomach is already in love with the food here.

Also per the request of Piotr and a few others, I will be posting my slides online via slideshare or some other medium for you guys (who can’t attend) to check out. Stay posted and wish me luck! I hope to post some pictures soon as well!
