Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki has given me so much more joy, curiosity and amazement/optimism/hope in life:
Lessons:
- Kiki Delivery Service: Even young kids can be entrepreneurs!
- Porco Rosso: Don’t let the past hold you back and empower the youth!
- Castle in the Sky: Go on more epic adventures in life!
- Grave of the Fireflies: War is horrible and be grateful for life.
- My Neighbor Totoro: Follow your curiosity
- The Wind Also Rises: Pursue your passion, no matter what.
- Nausica: Respect nature, animals, and the earth.
- Princess Mononoke: There’s a fine line between “good” and “evil”
Cinematography Lessons
- Study the color palette and combinations
- Variety of high angle landscape shots, closeups, and the use of layers and depth
- Filling the frame with details and lots of dynamic movement
- For food, sticking to 3 colors or less (learned this at the Studio Ghibli museum; highly recommended)
