How to Never Run Out of Motivation in Your Photography

Dear friends,

One of our greatest challenges: staying motivated in our photography.

How does one have infinite motivation in their photography? I think I got it figured out:

1. Nomadic is best

The more you can opt for a nomadic existence and life, the better. I have no idea what your job or life situation is, but the more you can think nomadic the better.

For example, if you have the option to travel, move jobs, move cities, move locations … choose it. All change is good.

2. The travel component

I’m currently here in Mexico City, and wow — the city blows me away. It is so much more epic than I remember! I think if one is able to travel for their photography at least once a month, or once every other month … it is great.

Why travel? It opens up your eyes, expands your perspectives, and stimulates you with new sights, smells, people, experiences, and worlds. I do believe strongly in travel.

3. The right camera

After having shot with all the cameras, I still believe in RICOH. I really believe the RICOH GR is the best camera, especially any of the newest ones. My simple heuristic:

What is the best RICOH digital camera, or the best new camera? The newest RICOH GR.

I currently have the RICOH GR III and it is on the last legs. When it totally breaks, I will probably get a GR IIIx or if the GRIV comes out. And the reason I love ERIC KIM WRIST STRAP is that I designed the optimal everyday carry camera strap for the RICOH GR (there are no other similar products on the market, so I decided to create my own ideal). Same goes with ERIC KIM NECK STRAP— no other camera strap comes even 1/10th close to being as beautiful as it.

4. Switching from monochrome to color

I ultimately prefer monochrome, but I also like shooting color. My simple thought:

Even though I prefer monochrome, when I lose inspiration to shoot black and white, I switch to color for a while … and sooner or later, I will eventually revert back to black and white.

And going through both (creative cycling) is a good thing. A world in only black and white would be boring, and a world only in color would be boring.

Embrace both, but I say —

Focus 80% of your effort on one aesthetic (whether monochrome or color), and focus 20% of your effort on the other aesthetic.

A simple tip is just shoot small JPEG, and switch to color or monochrome when you feel like it.

5. Your best photos are the ones you’ve shot today

Let us not think too retrospectively. Think today, the future, growth, new opportunities, new experiences, and new worlds which beckon you!
