The Joy of Photography

Philosophy means love of wisdom (philos=love) Sophia (wisdom).

I then thought as photographers we are also philosographers (lovers of making photos, or loving painting with light)! #photolosophy

Philos / Graphy

Philos (love) of photography (painting with light)!

This is what I think:

As photographers, we achieve maximum delight and joy in life when we are actively making new photos, enjoying the photos of others, and just thinking about photographs, images, and visuals!

In our new children’s photography book (My First Photography Book) we explored the idea that your phone or camera is a “magic box”, and can allow us to see and experience the world with much more vivacity, brightness, excitement and joy!

Joy in photography

I think we shouldn’t use the word “happiness” to describe a state we desire. Why? It’s too general.

I prefer “joy”, which means a feeling of elevated delight, which generally comes to us through the simple things in life, as well as when we are actively making stuff!

Therefore to maximize joy in your life through photography, some simple ideas:

  1. Never stop shooting: Always discover new and fun ways for you to make photos, which excite and delight you!

  2. When you need inspiration, buy books, not gear. Books are the best way to find new motivation and ideas in photography! Also study the work of the masters, to draw from their philosophical insights.

  3. Photograph what “sparks joy” in your life. If you see something that makes you smile, make a photo of it!
