How to Maximize Your Impact and Reach on the Planet

Something which has been very interesting, currently living here in Phnom Penh Cambodia, at this point, it seems that Cambodia is just a new colony of mainland China. For example, if you look into the Belt and Road Initiative, something I witnessed very interesting was a map of it, and Vietnam, Cambodia, Southeast Asia in general, we’re all painted in red. My point of thought that is that all of these countries which are bordering China, have essentially become assimilated into China.

Therefore my basic idea is this:

Can people in mainland China access your photography, website, and stuff via their Internet?

Or via baidu.com (their local Google)?

how open source is the future

I believe the reason why open source is the key to maximize your impact and influence in the world is this:

Stuff is open source, it is more likely accessible by anyone on the planet.

And something else I’ve realized is this: maximizing your impact, notoriety, fame, and influence is more important than money or any other metric of success.

    “Baidu yourself”

And one of my life goals was to become number one on Google for “Eric Kim”. Now that I have achieved that life goal, a simple thought:

If you search your first and last name on baidu.com, will you show up?

    Think globally

Something I really like about the new iOS beta is one of the default wallpapers is a GPS coordination of planet earth. It is a nice visual, as it has us to think bigger, more globally, at the earth scale, rather than our myopic and shortsighted view of our own locale.

For example, I like the Socrates quote — when somebody asked him where he was from, he said “I am a citizen of the world“. I believe this is an attitude we should all adopt.

Why are people so racist towards mainland Chinese?

Why is everyone so fearful of mainland China, and why do so many people disdain Chinese tourists?

    Several thoughts:

    1. First of all, mainland Chinese tourists often do not act with “proper“ notions of Western modernity. For example, yell yell, speak loudly in public, spit in public, etc. They order and boss people around like they are their slaves or servants. This is very anti-western notions of what is considered “proper“, if you think about the UK British notions of Victorian properness.
    2. Second, honestly, I think a lot of people hate mainland Chinese because they are so rich. For example, when I was in Hong Kong, it seems that everyone is low-key jealous of the mainland Chinese tourists, because they are so rich, and can just buy out the Gucci, Louis Vuitton, or Hermès store by themselves.
    3. Third, it seems that all nations, in order to thrive, need some sort of enemy. For example, if you observe the goldeneye movies, or even modern day American politics, there is always a foreign enemy. Whether it be the communist, the Russians, the Chinese, etc. Funny enough though, now that a lot of mainland Chinese people prefer to watch American cinema, anti-Chinese sentiment is being toned down. For example, when I watched the pacific rim two movie, which was funded by a Chinese company, the western guys and the Chinese guys all worked together to fight off the aliens. I think this is a good thing.
    4. Censorship, whether soft censorship or hard censorship. Something which is very annoying as of late, is how a lot of my blog posts and links are no longer indexed by Google, because of millennium act DCMA takedown requests, from corporations like Pearson education photography. I believe that copyright is anti-innovation. My low-key suspicion is that a lot of these corporations which peddle their educational books, see my open source comprehensive guide to photography as anti-their sales, and therefore will send bogus takedown request to Google, in order to not have people access information on my website. anyways, all governments, and places around the world since they’re their citizens in one way or another. The Chinese do it more overly, whereas America does it more low key.

    Back to accessibility

My radical idea was to just open source everything, and make everything oaks open and accessible and free to everybody. The reason was this:

When I was a poor scrappy kid, I could not afford to pay for these products or services. No way in hell could a 14-year-old from a poor working class family with a single mom afford to buy a digital copy of Photoshop, Microsoft office, etc.

At least one of the upsides of the subscription model is that anyone could afford Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, and also Google Docs in Google cloud services are now superior to Microsoft office products. Yet, if you’re still from a developing country like Cambodia in Vietnam, a lot of people cannot afford to pay $10 a month for something. For example, a full-time teacher in Cambodia will only make $200 US a month. Also, Grab/Uber drivers in Cambodia on a good day will only make $20-$30 USD a day, driving 12 hours a day straight. And this doesn’t really account for their expenses. Even a brand new graduate from a top university in Vietnam, from a well to do middle class background, will start their salary of only $500 US a month, working for a high prestige bank in Vietnam.

And this is where Google is so intelligent; Android is by far the most dominant software platform on the planet, and if you account for the fact that because Android is open-source, anyone from India, or Asia can afford to buy a cheap $100 smart phone. Although Apple is more desirable, and sexier, Android rules the planet, not iOS.

    Why is accessibility important?

For example, if you’re a citizen of mainland China, unless you have access to a VPN or firewall, you cannot access lots of things we take for granted in the states, for example Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, even wordpress.com websites or blogs.

And think, assuming that China accounts for half of the planets population, don’t you want those billions of people to access your stuff?

    Money, power, or influence?

It seems if you want to maximize your impact and influence in the world, you must disregard money as a metric for a success. For example, I believe if you want to become more influential, you must also become more poor. Or at least, not care so much for money.

For example, if you consider the spartan 300s; the Spartans had the most personal freedom in their lives, and also their culture has still widely inspired individuals today. Yet, consider the slave like Persians; better to be a spartan 300 hoplite then enslaved Persian, even if the enslaved person was a billionaire or trillionaire.

    JPEG

The first simple thought is this: make your full resolution JPEG images easily accessible online. I’ve even found some Chinese bloggers and bloggers index my images in their blog posts, as all my images are easily accessible via JPEG download, or a zip files with JPEG files. Full resolution your images, and let your style be the copyright. Not the copyright itself.

    Beyond social media

Once again, if somebody from mainland China doesn’t have access to Google, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc., how will they have access to your photos or access your work or ideas?

    Think very long term

For example, let us say that tomorrow, for one reason or another, your Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube account gets deleted. Or podcasting channel. What would you do then?

For example, if for some reason PewDiePie‘s YouTube channel got deleted overnight, and he would not be able to recover any of his videos or stuff or subscribers, he would be screwed.

Or, let us say that your Instagram account got deleted, hacked, whatever. Would people be able to access you?

Social media is fragile, because when you are on social media, you are just a digital sharecropper. There is a false sense of ownership; you think you “own” the land, but you just do is till, maintain it, and you get some profit from it. But ultimately, social media is slavery 3.0.

Start your own self hosted email newsletter

sendy.co is what I use, and even though setting it up was very very difficult, ultimately, it will maximize my impact on the planet. Why? It is my suspicion that mailchimp, and mailchimp.com will ultimately be censored as well, either by mainland China or some other government.

Even though I personally hate email as a form of communication, it is still the most easily open and free form of communication we got in the planet. For example, if somebody knows what your email is, at least they could contact you and send a message to you. This is where telegram is also good, it seems that telegram is the new Facebook messenger and WhatsApp. Everyone in Cambodia uses telegram, even businesses.

    My basic thought:

Strive to send emails that you yourself would like getting.

    For example,

    1. Have you ever received an email, or some sort of email news marketing, that you yourself did not overtly subscribe to? Yes, and I hate it. Don’t do that to other people. Have them opt in it themselves, the most honest and open approach.
    2. Make your emails nice and meaty. Make it as substantive and meaningful as possible. It is my personal aspiration to do in a single newsletter that most people strive to do in a book, alas cannot even do in a book (Nietzsche).

    Nothing is evergreen

Whenever I promote my upcoming workshops, products, etc., I have realized and accepted now that nothing is evergreen. To strive to create something that lasts forever is not a good idea. Why? Even evergreen trees don’t last forever. Just try to make it as robust as you can, and to withhold the test of time.

This is why I don’t really care for camera reviews, or equipment or digital reviews. Why? Every digital camera gets outdated every six months or a year. The same goes with the iPhone or any Apple product. Deal with more integral human matters:

    1. How to stay inspired and motivated in photography, even if you lived on a spaceship, or on the moon, or on Mars.
    2. Philosophical ideas with photography, for example, the meaning of photography, and the meaning of yourself being a photographer, on becoming a photographer // becoming a photographer open source video download or PDF TEXT.

    Think PDF

Make stuff easily downloadable. For example, put them in zip files, and PDFs. Also attached JPEG images.

    PDF FILES: https://erickimphotography.com/blog/pdf/

Also as a simple thought, make the website URL simple and memorable.

Why JPEG is superior to RAW

The more people who “steal your stuff“, the better.

Don’t be afraid of people “stealing” your stuff. Rather, the more you propagate, the better.

  • ENGLISH IS KING.

Note, mainly in Chinese people know English, and also watch American films, yet Americans don’t know Chinese or Mandarin.

At this point moving forward, at least in our lifetimes, and in the lifetimes of our children, it looks like English will continue to be the dominant language.

  • Is it easier for China to penetrate the US market, or easier for the US to penetrate the China market?

For example, Faraday Future is a Chinese electric car company essentially, but moonlights as an American one.

  • Access.

Can people access your stuff or not?

  • Think Global

Question; can people in mainland China access your website and stuff? Is your website indexed by baidu.com?

  • Hard vs Soft Censorship

The difference between China and America; China partakes in hard censorship, whereas America partakes in soft censorship.

  • What is Money?

Money is solidified human physiological energy?

  • More energy, for what?

It seems people want more energy, only for the sake of making more money.

  • How much separation off the ground?

For example, if you’re traveling, and you go to a “dirty” marketplace, you probably want some separation off the floor. But how much?

  • Poor, but with more power

Consider, America as a nation might be more poor than China, but we have more power, as we have the number one military in the world by at least 800x fold.

  • America, Innovation & War Machines

    America, Innovation & War Machines

Why America will remain on top:

When push comes to shove, and let us say that America is #1 in innovation in the world, America’s penchant for innovation is best used for their war machine innovations.

China gets critique for “copying” the design of America innovations. Also stuff that is “made in China” is critiqued for having poor quality control. So let us assume when China tries to innovate their own war machines … they will probably also lack the same self-rigor of quality control for their war machines (not a good thing).

As much as I hate war, violence — the truth seems that in fact, because of America’s war military superiority on the plant, this is what ensures our freedom, power, and control.

Let us also assume that America’s ability to innovate is what helped us win the war (World War II). Consider the Manhattan project and the Atom Bomb. Also, currently Lockheed Martin.

  • America is the Biggest Bully

And this is why America will stay on top?

Also, it seems that the Chinese care too much for their personal wealth. For example, the rich oligarchs of China care too much for their Rolls-Royce‘s, and their positions of power. Americans care for their wealth, but not that much. Also in order for the top Chinese to maintain their wealth, they are still dependent on having good ties with government. Americans, less so.

Anyone who is so afraid that China will take over, is either delusional, or they want America to fail. In fact, a lot of the pro Chinese individuals I have met in the states— Americans, were often not born in the states. And not enough strong national pride.

Also, most of the very rich and powerful people I’ve met from the states are actually liberals, who seem like they could care less for “America” as a nation.

At least one of the good things about conservatives and a lot of right-wing folks is that they are blindly pro-American— certainly to a fault, but better to be myopically pro your own country, than “woke” and anti your own nation.

  • HOW FAR CAN YOU VENTURE?

My curiosity on traveling to China, and traveling to more places around the world. My curiosity to venture further.

Or or aphorism, what is doubt, venture further.

  • How to Become the Best Photographer

How to Become the Best Photographer

    Motivational Photo Thoughts

How you can become the best photographer:

    Best, how so?

Optimal, optimus means “the best”. I like the American idea —

    Be all you can be.

    In photography,

Become the best photographer you can become.

    Becoming a photographer

In my vlog on becoming a photographer, my belief:

Your life task goal is to become the best photographer you can possibly become.

This is done independently of others. Their opinions, metrics, likes comments follows, etc.

Don’t compare your photography with anyone else

Comparison is the death of creativity and motivation in photography and life. By comparing yourself, your kids, your art, photos etc with others you are saying and doing:

In order to judge the worth of this, I must benchmark it against something else external of my control.

For photography, why judge it against anyone else?

For example, it seems most photographers judge their worth in respect to Henri Cartier-Bresson. All the Magnum photographers have thus far lived in the shadow of grandfather Henri Cartier-Bresson.

However, the reason why this is such a bad approach is that even Henri Cartier-Bresson himself give up photography. Why? My theory is that he had hidden penis envy of his other painter artist friends; he secretly wanted to be a painter, not a photographer. Ultimately, he even deemed photography as not a “legit“ art form, that photography was simply a precursor to drawing and painting. Therefore, in order to advance, we must kill our masters.

Why all artists are bad role models

Also, the reason why I think it is so bad to find inspiration from any other artist, either dead or living is this:

Besides perhaps Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, all artists of the past or present seem to have low self-confidence.

For example, I believe the artists during the renaissance didn’t even see themselves as “artists”. They simply did what they felt they must do.

For example, painting seem to have been more of a side hobby for Leonardo Vinci than anything. He seem to be more interested in human anatomy and physiology, mechanics, engineering, etc. He was a fully formed man.

Even Michelangelo; he seem to be driven by extremes. Note the Sistine chapel, and his great sculpture.

    Don’t classify yourself as anything

Perhaps in order to advance, you shouldn’t classify yourself as anything. Maybe not even a visual artist.

Why? When you classify yourself, you chain yourself. Even Elon Musk, I like that he doesn’t classify himself as anything. Yet he is one of the head designers for Tesla, and one of the greatest entrepreneurs and businessman of all time. Note how Elon never calls himself a “entrepreneur“.

Even Kanye West; I feel like he really got his wings when he no longer chained himself to just being a “producer“, or just a “rapper” or just a fashion guy. I think Kanye West is the closest thing we have to an artistic uberman. Even Nietzsche said that the uberman would be a hybrid of Christ meets Dionysus. Note Kanye West and his YEEZUS album, full of dark Dionysian energy, meets his “JESUS IS KING” Christian spiritual reawakening hybrid.

    Back to photography

A radical idea I have is this:

What if you channeled all of your money, and life force energy into photography? What could you become?

A simple thought is just use all of your money to travel, live abroad, or situate yourself in a place or city which is most conducive to your photography. For example, as of late I have been insanely productive in photography here in Phnom Penh Cambodia. I really think that Phnom Penh is a photo paradise.

Life in Phnom Penh is insanely good.

And this is where you could funnel all your money; investing in travel experiences, workshops, anything that will give you fresh new eyes for photography.

It seems to be a truism that travel is very very good for motivating you to make new photos. Why? That which is new, foreign, is a good way to reawaken you. Often “travel photography“ gets a bad critique, but, I think this critique comes more from toxic non-achieving photographers, who try too hard to be Magnum.

Once again, the greatest thing holding us back as creatives is this desire for legitimacy. However, this is bad. Don’t crowd source your self-esteem.

Where should I share my photos?

Not Facebook, not Instagram. Share it on your own blog, or make a slideshow and share it on YouTube.

Register your own domain and website on bluehost.com, and install wordpress.org. Not easy, but it is straightforward and effective.

What if I want feedback on my photos?

    If so, upload to arsbeta.com

What is the greatest thing holding us back is photographers? A lot of these toxic, low self-esteem photographers who try too hard to be Magnum, and become a “serious“ and well-regarded photographer.

  • “IF THE BAR AIN’T BENDIN, YOU PRETENDIN’”

One of my favorite Hugh Jackman quotes. A thought which came to my mind when attempting a four plate, 220 kg squat, around 485 pounds.

  • What Should I Do With My Life?

    Some simple thoughts:

First of all, get into weightlifting. Specifically, powerlifting or hypelifting. The source of all of our power and greatness comes from our body, and in order to produce great work, you must first have a great body. I never trust any innovations from people who are skinny fat, and also people who have never touched a barbell in their lives. Remember the Hugh Jackman quote,

” If the bar ain’t bendin, you pretendin”.

Second thought: harness all of your physiological strength towards photography, or your creative pursuits.

Third thought: you must publish and share your work. One of the strange biases is that somehow, if you desire to become a great philosopher, thinker or artist or poet, you must seclude yourself, and never share any of your stuff. However this is false, as the great philosophers of the past wrote hundreds of books, probably gave hundreds of speeches and round table discussions, and if Nietzsche never published his work, we will not have access to his great ideas.

  • Why iPad Pro is the best Apple device

120hz display refresh rate. Uber-clean and fresh and smooth.

Feels great in the hand, super solid. Beautiful, perfected design. Perfect size, don’t get the stupid big one. The normal size is best. Just read Walter Isaacson‘s biography on Steve Jobs, how’s Steve Jobs was so adamant against an iPad mini, or a bigger iPad, how he considered the normal sized iPad, the perfect one.

Insanely good microphone, very accurate, especially when doing voice dictation.

No stupid keyboard, no stylus (the Apple ”Pencil“ Is the thing that Steve Jobs would’ve hated the most). The reason why Steve Jobs was against “netbooks“, and that he preferred the iPad without an external keyboard or a stylus is that he believed that it would allow for more innovation, when just using your finger, which is most natural for children and humans. Think about finger painting instead of drawing with a pencil.

  • Men Should Not Get Distracted By Women

Men Should Not Get Distracted By Women

A real man just focuses on his task at hand. Consider the ancient Greeks. All of the ancient folly is men getting distracted by women (Iliad — Paris). Essentially the whole war of the Iliad is waged over just one woman.

    Also Achilles and Breises.

Perhaps this is why in ancient Roman or Greek times, women were not allowed in the gymnasium.

A critique on chasing women, and striving to find too much romantic love or completeness from women.

Rather than seek a woman who “completes you”, first strive to complete yourself!

    How rappers get too distracted

Also not getting distracted too much by women (women as a means for sexual pleasure). Consider every time you ejaculate, it is “energy suicide” according to ancient Chinese medicine. For example, not a good idea to blow your load before attempting a new one rep max attempt at your deadlift!

    Don’t strive to impress women

Also not a good idea striving to impress women with your muscles, clothes, cars money etc. Wasted effort and time!

Not only is this ineffective (women don’t really care for the muscles of men, and women also could care less about what car you drive), but it’s also the wrong path — a distracting and fruitless path. Simply strive to impress yourself!

  • Future Human Aesthetic

    Future Human Aesthetic

Incredibly muscular and strong. Powerlifter meets bodybuilder physique.

Futuristic silhouette and clothes. More revealing flesh (tank top, short shorts).

  • Piggybacking off your past culture?

It seems the French and Italians don’t really have much going for themselves anymore — they piggy back off their past culture.

China (post Mao) still yet has a culture. It is something they’re trying to build now.

The most dynamic is American culture — always popular, evolving and in flux. Note rap music, American films, YouTube, social media, iPhone and Apple, and sneaker and hip hop culture.

This is where retro fashion is so lame — it’s boring. Even as a kid who was born in 1988, I find the 90s fashion and stuff insanely lame.

Relying on past things requires no risk. It is too safe.

This is where I love Balenciaga and Kanye West and Yeezy— the attempt to create a new, modern and future fashion!

  • Why is nobody happy?

I’m the only happy person I know. And Seneca.

  • Being abroad is great for kids!

Perhaps an “unstable” upbringing is better for kids!

For example, Seneca gets 1 million times the amount of stimulation and exposure to new things while in Phnom Penh compared to back home in the states.

Also, better for myself as well! BOGO — what’s good for you is also good for kids.

  • Why Is Life in Phnom Penh So Good?

First of all, super easy to book a grab taxi anywhere, just for a few bucks. This is great, because it means you don’t need to own a car. A lifestyle in which you don’t need a car is the best lifestyle.

Second, the city is rapidly developing in a good way. Very exciting. Seeing a lot of new stuff being built is super optimistic and motivational for me.

Third, great gyms, and the day passes are very affordable at around $10-$12 USD.

Fourth, great restaurants and places to eat. Our favorite all you could eat shabu shabu place, Mo Mo Paradise, only $21 per person.

Fifth, it is very interesting to be at the intersection of Chinese development, Japanese development, and South Korean investments.

Sixth, the people are insanely friendly and hospitable. Very warmhearted.

Seven, very good for digital nomad. Very easy and cheap to get a 4G Sim card, for only 10 bucks a month. Also, free Wi-Fi everywhere. Lots of also good coffee shops to work at if you want.

Eight, very interesting for photography and street photography. Phnom Penh is my new favorite city in the world for photography and life in general.

  • There are never any perfect conditions

And even when the conditions are optimal, it doesn’t really give you that huge of an edge.

  • NOW OR NEVER

Or in other words, tomorrow is never.

  • CARPE DIEM!

Put faith only in today, never tomorrow.

  • PURE DOMINANCE.

    PURE DOMINANCE.

The new Bugatti Mistral— the design (front and back end) is pure dominance.

  • Synergy

For example, the ideal life partner is an individual who you have great synergy with.

  • Beautiful proportions are dictated by nature

For example, the Doryphoros or spear bearer statue. Even the Farnese Hercules, has both insanely beautiful proportions.

  • Super new and clean

The ideal brand-new car is all white; the ultimate in cleanliness and newness.
