Bad Photos Don’t Exist Anymore.

What do you do in a world with no more bad photos?

Why would you still make images…when someone already has shot it, or even an AI can shoot it better than you?

All photos are good.

I already see it today. There are no more bad photos.

All the photos are pretty good. Good exposure. Decent composition.

If you look on social media, our streams are full of well composed, nice colors, minimalist photos. People generally only share flattering photos of themselves. Photographers only show their best work.

All cameras are good.

There are no more bad cameras.

You buy a new phone, the camera will be very good.

With digital cameras, all these cameras make very good photos. The only reason you buy a digital camera nowadays is to look more “pro”, or as a fashion accessory.

Why do you make photos?

Why make photos, in a world of good images?

  1. Personal documentation: Nobody else can shoot photos of your loved ones, and your own life. This is something you cannot out source to Google.
  2. The joy of creation: We like to make photos, because of the joy or the thrill of creation. When we click the shutter, it is a creative act. It is intentional. It is fun. We will still make photos, because creation is more fun than consumption.
  3. We want to do it for ourselves: We don’t need any more photos of the Eiffel Tower. Yet, we want to do it for ourselves. Why? A sense of conquest, or accomplishment. To know that you can do it. Or perhaps, to live out your fantasy and life goals?

Make photos for yourself.

My lesson:

Don’t focus on making good photos. Make personally meaningful photos.

Anyone with their iPhone can make a good photo now. But not everyone can make a personally meaningful photo.

This is what PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHY is all about. Therapy for yourself meditated through the tool of the camera.
