Why composition? Why photography? Some thoughts:

Shooting a lot.

Street photography:

First- make LOTS of photos of scenes you find particularly interesting.

With street photography once it happens; it is gone forever. This is what makes street photography composition 1 trillion times more difficult than let us say, photographing flowers.

Photography is new, painting has been around for longer.

Discovering inspiration from the old-school masters seems wise. Why? Principles of composition have been around for a very long time. Better filter than to just study contemporary photography.

Studying the human form

As a photographer-artist, it is always advantageous to you to study art. All forms of art. Sculpture is particularly interesting to me, because it lasts.

Cross-pollination of composition

An effective activity:

Find a classic Renaissance painting or pose you like, and try to imitate it (100% framing) inside your camera.

Also fun thoughts:

Think to yourself– “What focal length did they use? What aperture did they use? How close or far away did they stand from their subject? How did they pose their subject?”
