Photography Types

There are many types of photography out there. And honestly, there isn’t a “superior” genre out there.

Better yet — perhaps we shouldn’t separate photography into different types? However at the same time, studying different photography genres is a good way to discover NEW forms or types of photography you might not yet know you’re interested in.

How I discovered street photography

Seoul, 2009

I discovered the genre of “street photography” totally accidentally. I enjoyed photographing people and street scenes, and it was maybe a year or two AFTER I’d already been shooting street photography I discovered it was actually a genre! I uploaded photos to an online forum, and people told me that they liked my “street photography”. Then a google search for street photography opened up a whole new world to me, which was fun, interesting, and exciting! Considering I’m very hungry for knowledge and wisdom, the information I found online helped me a ton.

Tokyo, 2011

Thinking beyond genres

After I discovered street photography, I pursued it with great zeal. However at a certain point, I started to feel trapped within the genre. This was good, because I started to broaden my views on street photography — including urban landscapes, “still life” photos, or just random snapshots of anything I witnessed.

Personal photography

I soon discovered personal photography — the basic notion is this:

Make beautiful photos of those who you love.

For myself, that is photographing Cindy — my wife and soulmate.

Soul photography

A step further from personal photography is what I call “soul photography”. The notion is that you make photos which reveal your soul and being.

Now, how do you photograph with your soul? It is simple:

Synthesize your own personal aesthetics, artistic vision, and make photos which speak to your own soul.

Or in simpler words:

Make photos which look beautiful in your eyes.

Create your own genre

Create your own type of photographic vision, and pursue it with all your might.

And recognize your photography is constantly changing and in a state of flux.

Furthermore, instead of trying to seek a type of photography which suits you, create YOUR OWN genre or type of photography which suits your needs!
