Physical Acts of Courage
To me, the only act of real courage is physical courage. The type of courage in the gym for attempting a new one rep max.
Also perhaps in hand to hand combat. Not with guns. This is where I am more about the Spartan 300 than puny John Wick; guns are democratizing, because even a skinny fat loser can kill you with a gun. Even the world gun champion looks very obese.

Nobody likes pollution
Even if you’re were the richest person on earth, nobody wants to live in a polluted city. This is why all of the very rich mainland Chinese love to go to Vancouver; for the fresh air, and nature.
And this is the great tragedy of China; they produce much of their wealth through production, via coal and polluting means. Yet after they establish their riches, they still gotta live somewhere.
The same is happening in Vietnam. The pollution in Hanoi can often be unbearable.
Maybe this is why everyone wants to live in California; even though the emission laws are annoying, it looks like California has been able to curb their pollution.
Also, this is why Tesla and electric cars are such a good future investment; once we could really use solar power, they will lessen the world emissions.

The reason why I am so addicted to deadlifts; during one rep max attempt, whether successes our failures, I go blank for about half a second. The ultimate out of body experience.

How Competition Holds Us Back
The downside of competition; we must abide by the “rules†of the competition. Rules, conventions, and what is standard and proper hold us back.
For example, the only reason I don’t see more people using a trap bar for deadlift is because of powerlifting competitions. I believe if strong guys would just use the trap bar, or hex bar, men would be able to deadlift a lot more.
Also, competition encourages cheating. It encourages people to start using strange hormones, and drugs, in order to enhance performance. This is bad.
What is the successful “we lifting anyways? To me, simply muscular activation, increased blood flow, and hype.

Also, perhaps this is how the ethos of mainland Chinese so interesting to me; their culture is carte blanche, and they do not follow typical societal rules or traditions. This is why everyone seems to despise them; they don’t follow normal orders of “properness“.
Cheating, lying, copying. These are all considered sins or vices in American culture. Yet, the Chinese will do anything to win; quite smart.
No more religion, or Confucianism holding the Chinese back.
Also unlike Americans, the Chinese do not complain. They just do.
Also, luxury is not considered a vice. Note in America, the west, and in the UK, they don’t call it luxury, they call it “fancyâ€. Even the word “luxury†is seen with distaste.
Yet, the Chinese indulge in luxury without any remorse; also what is interesting is that it is generally accepted that one only buys luxury goods if you can afford it. Compare this to the fake rich people of America, who overstretch their budget to buy luxury goods.
Maybe perhaps in the long run, China will indeed become the dominant power force on the planet.

NEUTRAL GRIP IS THE BEST GRIP.
With weightlifting, just use a neutral grip. Neutral grip for chin ups, deadlift (use a hex bar, or trap bar). For bench press, use dumbbells with a neutral grip. Also with push-ups, using push-up bars allows for a neutral grip for push-ups.
Design, and product design should look more at natural human anatomy.

Asia is more hygienic than America
Perhaps it is because labor here is so much cheaper, and custodial staff are more industrious here. The bathrooms are 1 trillion times cleaner than any American bathroom.
Also in Asia, no labor shortages.

How uniqueness is a red herring
Ultimately, I believe what drives consumerism and to some extent capitalism is the desire for uniqueness. For example with fashion, we strive to get that one outfit which sets us apart, that nobody else has. The same goes with cars, devices, watches and things.
However at a certain point, we all have the same stuff. For example, we all have an iPhone, we all have an iPad, we all have a MacBook laptop. With cars, we all have the same cars too.
With photography, and art, we all strive for distinction. Yet, maybe it is fine that we all use the same camera equipment, and also when it comes to our aesthetic style, maybe it isn’t a big deal that we are super same or different. Perhaps what matters most is whether we just are having fun or not.

Why fast fashion is the future
Being here in Phnom Penh, the price points for H&M products are actually affordable and in reach for local, up-and-coming middle-class Cambodians.
Why are people so anti-fast fashion? My theory: it is an elitism thing. People don’t like the idea that anyone and everyone can look cool, with cool styles.
For example, Zara is often critiqued for “stealing†the newest styles. However, all of the clothes I bought a Zara, either brand new or secondhand have lasted until now!
Clothes don’t fall apart anymore
Whoever says that the “quality“ of H&M, Zara, and other products isn’t good is misguided. What do you really mean? The clothes don’t fall apart. They last forever.
The only critique should be that people get easily bored of their old clothes, old fashion, and purchase new clothes to follow the new trends. And this happens anywhere and everywhere, irrespective of how fast or “slow†the fashion is.
And nobody throws away their clothes; rather, for most Americans, the clothes keep piling up in their closets, with no end.
Therefore, the only big problem can be a production thing; producing new clothes causes environmental damage. This should be the focus of “sustainable“ fashion.

Why America is on the way out
The problem with America is that it is too old. Too many old people, far outweigh the number of young people. Also, intelligent and rich people are no longer having children anymore. They would prefer to have dogs instead and to live out their “individualistic“ lives.
Also, if you look at all the infrastructure of America it is far too old. The same goes with Japan. I suppose one of the benefits of being here in Southeast Asia, like in Phnom Penh, or Vietnam is that because the population is so young, greater innovation, and infrastructure being built carte blanche.

How to be productive with a kid
One of the hardest things is to stay productive, while having a kid. Especially, a young kid.
Some thoughts:
First of all, Siri voice dictation and commands. Practice saying “Hey Siriâ€â€” “take a noteâ€, etc.
Also, use an iPhone mini or an iPhone SE. When you got a kid, you will never have both hands free. Therefore, a phone you can comfortably use with one hand in the future.
Also, set up your iPhone keyboard in the one-handed mode.


Sleep when your kid sleeps
The best piece of advice I got is this: sleep when your kids sleep. Sleep when your kid goes to sleep in the evening, and also nap when your kid naps. The number one key to productivity is sleep.
The worst thing to do is try to be “productive“ when your kid is sleeping or napping. Do not be a fool. Sleep more, become more productive.
Innovate your work
Nowadays, I never touch my laptop. All the work I either do it on my phone or my iPad.
Ironically enough, one of the greatest things of having a kid is that it forces you to be more clever and innovative with your work approaches, out of pure necessity. For example, I discovered using voice dictation instead of typing— both on my phone, and the iPad, and it works insanely well.

Filter your priorities
Also one of the greatest benefits of having a kid is that because your time and physiological energy becomes sol limited, it becomes a natural filter. For example, a natural filter of your relationships, and what you do. Once you become a parent, the wisest thing to do is to renounce many things. To leave many things undone.
Therefore, with productivity, it isn’t to do more, it is to ruthlessly prune and cut out all the superfluous things in your life, and instead, to channel all of your energy into things which really really really really matter to you.

Always be moving
Like Jay said, you gotta keep it moving. Both physically and metaphorically.
For example, my great joy of innovating this notion of blogging while walking, just using Siri voice dictate.

Also, how does one stay productive while having a young kid? Simple: just walk around with your kid in the ergo baby carrier, keep moving. You could shoot photos this way too!

Cool to see Brad Pitt in the new bullet train movie, yet, he looks really really old. Not in a good way.
Funny enough, even Tom Cruise looks younger. Granted that Tom Cruise probably has more things injected into his face.

For shoes, extreme minimalism — practically barefoot (you are the technology, Vibram 5 Fingers).
Innovation in the human body
The human body. Intermittent fasting, greater meat consumption, no sugar, sweet, carbs, starch diet.
Also, in powerlifting, hypelifting, weight lifting. Discovering new ways to push your body to the max, new types of lifts. For example, trap bar or hex bar deadlift over the standard or sumo style.
Also, innovation in form. For example, in order to bear heavier awaits, better to â€cheat†in your squat. Challenge notions of “proper†and “full range of motionâ€.

What some people call “lifestyleâ€â€” innovate how you live and approach life. A living philosophy.

TESTING.
Testing as a life ethos or a life approach:
“Life is not a testâ€
Or is it?
To me, the differentiation I make is this: whether the testing is done by yourself, and using your own personal metrics, or whether the testing is external, that is, being judged by some sort of external authority.
For example, the type of testing that I personally despise standardized testing. To standardize things is to make our children more mediocre, more uninteresting, and more bland.
Why does standardized testing exist?
I think the purpose of standardized testing is a hierarchy thing; for example, if you are born to rich family, and your family could afford private tutoring, and SAT prep, certainly you’ll score higher than a kid from the ghetto of Compton.
Also, a legitimacy thing. If you were born to a high aristocrat family, the Confucian examination as a test of moral uprightness, and your family honor. The history of testing on Wikipedia is hugely fascinating.
Creating a new notion of self testing
If we think about this philosophically, how does one build willpower? Not by actively forcing yourself to do things, but actually, through self-restraint. For example, the hilarious “no fap†challenge. That is, can you go a full year, that is 365 days without fapping? Also my funny thought:
Is it porn if you don’t fap?
What types of self testing should you institute for yourself?
One of the reasons I love powerlifting, or hypelifting is this: to test your strength and to test your courage. And for me it doesn’t really matter whether I succeed or fail, what I’m more curious about is fulfilling my personal curiosity on my strength.
For example, the other day I attempted to deadlift 540 pounds, that is, 245kilograms (YouTube video). Long story short, I failed the attempt. However, what was very fascinating is that I was able to successfully lift the weight off the ground, about a centimeter. Or a few inches. And this is where my pride comes in:
I am simply proud that I even had the personal audacity to attempt it.
Also, I am quite confident that with more time and training, I will be able to successfully lift it.
Don’t hype yourself out
An interesting turbo thought I had while being here in Cambodia, Phnom Penh is this: I am grateful that at the gym, all of the weights are in kilograms. Why is this? Back in the states, I think I hype myself out with the standardized weights that I am accustomed to. For example, in America, the standard “plate“ is a 45 pound, typically red weight. therefore, there are certain standardized measures of strength:
For example, most guys desire to deadlift four or five plates, squat three plates, and bench press at least two plates. And from a glance, you can see how strong somebody is by the number of plates they have on the barbell.
However, the downside of the standardization is that you become stuck on the “plate“ notion. For example, if whenever I attempt a dead lift, and I see four 45-pound weights on each side of the barbell, I believe it to be very very heavy weight, which strikes a little bit of fear in my breast.
Why I have less fear with the metric system
However, with the metric system, or kilograms, because of my ignorance, I have no fear. The same thing goes with temperature; I have no idea how hot weather is when it comes to centigrade, yet I am very clear with Fahrenheit. For example, I have no idea how hot it is when it is 30° or 40°C out, but I know it is very hot when it is 90° or 100°F.
Therefore my thought is this: numbers strike fear in us. In order to feel less fear, perhaps becoming more ignorant of numbers, standardized numbers, standardized systems, or metrics is good. Also, in order to achieve more in life, I believe it to be a good idea to “demetricate yourselfâ€. Demetricate your life.
Also, to Demetricate Your Photography — to detach your self worth as a photographer from numbers.
How to test yourself
Now, our topic of interest is this: how do we test ourselves, in a substantive, and meaningful way?
1. Do not use numbers
The first thought is that when it comes to self-testing, don’t use numbers. All numbers are bad.
Maybe even with weightlifting: we should stop measuring the number, just rate your personal difficulty. For example, when you go to the gym, just keep adding weights onto the barbell, until you can no longer do it. Actively keep pushing it until you fail the attempt.
2. Failure is success
Maybe we can also invert this notion: “success“ is when you fail. That is, a successful trip to the gym is when you push yourself to the max, and you attempt an insanely high weight, and you discover the point in which you can no longer physically lift the weight anymore, not even a centimeter.
As a practical suggestion, I suggest using a hex bar, or a trap bar at the gym for deadlifts, as the motion is more natural, offers better leverage, and is “saferâ€.
3. Motivation testing
My friend Mark Diekhans said something very funny: his goal for the new year was to drink more coffee, not less. Certainly there are practical limits to this, that is, probably not a good idea to drink 50 cups of coffee in a day. However the thought for me is interesting:
How much coffee can my body tolerate?
Also, I try to make it a personal rule to cut off caffeine after midday. That is, I am 100% certain that consuming coffee, caffeine, tea, or any caffeinated beverage, or stimulating beverage like cacao powder, cacao nibs, etc. are positively bad in the evenings.
However, during my waking hours, that is in the morning, and early morning, how much coffee can I drink?
Also, I have a personal fun challenge, that is, a “meat PR†(the personal record for how much meat I can consume in one sitting). For example, my Tabu Shabu challenge of being able to eat over 3 pounds of meat in less than 30 minutes.
Therefore my first thought about setting personal challenges is testing your own personal motivation, for something which personally interests you, regardless of how silly it made seem.
Nassim Taleb has a good aphorism on this:
What fools call out “waste of time†is often the best use of your time. (Taleb, Bed of Procrustes)
I personally believe that we should inject more humor in our lives. This is why I love the Twitter of Elon Musk; she is very funny. It doesn’t take himself too seriously. This actually makes him a lot more likable, and interesting.
“Jack off the board!†(Referring to Jack Dorsey, the founder of twitter who apparently left the board of directors after the Elon acquisition of Twitter).
4. Integrate your learning lessons
One of the most useful things about judging the misbehaviors of others; it is a good shortcut for you to live a more virtuous life yourself.
For example, with parenting; whenever I witnessed certain things that parents did, before the birth of Seneca, I made a mental note of it, in order to not copy it myself.
Testing, and self testing yourself, you must learn these lessons, and integrate it into your future behavior. Otherwise, it is not worthwhile.
5. Street photography as courage testing
One of the best ways to figure out whether a potential street photo might be good or not; how much courage you had to exhibit in order to attempt the photo.
Therefore, nowadays, I judge my photography and street photography based on how much courage I had to risk in order to make the photo. Therefore, testing your courage in street photography is good.
Also, if you want to make a certain photo, test your social courage. For example, testing your social skills— this means when you’re in doubt, you could just approach the person and ask for permission. Asking for permission actually might take more courage than shooting the photo without permission.
Same goes with approaching a beautiful person, and striking up a conversation with them. Testing your courage is good.
