Black and White Photography

Black and white— classic, timeless, and personal:

Monochrome tips

  1. High contrast JPEG on your camera. Max out the contrast. In processing, “crush the blacks”.
  2. Get close to your subjects.
  3. Use a flash for more drama.

How to master monochrome

  1. Study the monochrome masters (Henri Cartier-Bresson, Josef Koudelka, Richard AVEDON, W. Eugene Smith), and analyze their images and compositions.
  2. Good to experiment with color, but eventually come back to monochrome to keep deepening your monochromatic skills and vision.
  3. Make your compositions stronger, simpler, more dynamic, and more elegant all at the same time!

Photograph those who interest you, and those you’re curious about.

Abstract the world

Make the world more beautiful, more artistic, more abstract.
