Hokusai

Visual Architecture

Studying Hokusai (Simplified lessons on drawing 1, Volume 2, Volume 3) a very interesting epiphany:

The hidden visual architecture of things.

Hidden shapes, forms

For example, the hidden triangles, parallelograms, hexagon shapes (Donkey head), as well as the circles with the middle points, and even specifically — a hidden circle behind the tail and butt of the donkey:

Hokusai

Why does this matter, and why is this significant?

Many reasons.

First — it can help us start to think more geometrically. Considering we are 2D-flat-visual photographer artists, to think in angles, shapes, and forms is hugely useful to our artistic production, thinking, and compositional innovations.

Hokusai and street photography

A fun reason why to study the works of Hokusai:

His “manga” (random drawings) series.

I hugely enjoy his drawings of everyday life street scenes in Japan. This is similar to what we are striving towards in street photography, except we do it with a camera!
