How I Make Beats in GarageBand

Basic ideas:

1. Do it in a spirit of fun and play

First of all, make beats for fun. Don’t do it to be good. Do it because it is a fun form of self-expression.

2. Figure it out as you go.

I had to do a lot of trial and error when I self-taught myself. And do it in a spirit of play. Kinda like when we were kids and we would break apart toaster ovens to simply see if we could re-put it together. Or what I did with my first computer: took it apart to put it back together.

Same theory about making beats.

3. Beats and music is augmented talking

EK v15

A big epiphany:

When you make beat, it is like you are augmenting your voice.

I put my spirit and soul into my beats. Thus when you hear my beats, you can hear a little more to myself. My soul.

4. It is all about progression

EK v14

I always make different versions. For example, “EK” is ERIC KIM Version 1, 2, …

I keep going as long as I feel the vibes. And I publish them online, to YouTube, or even my podcast.
