BARBELL PHILOSOPHY TO LIFE

A-la Nassim Taleb’s idea:

To live a greater life, embrace the ‘barbell’ strategy and philosophy to life.

For example:

Why barbell?

Basic idea:

Embrace extremes for the optimal result or outcome.

For example, intermittent fasting. No food during breakfast or lunch, and massive dinner to break your fast.

Or powerlifting — go for “one rep max” attempts, instead of boring reps.

Or with alcohol or drugs. Better to get shitface drunk once a week (or month) than to drink regularly everyday.

Deadlifting 420 pounds (four 45-plates on each side, with a 2.5+5 pounder)
Avoid the middle.

Hyper social or anti-social?

Perhaps also with social interactions—

Sometimes be hyper social, sometimes be hyper antisocial.

Hella expensive or free

Another entrepreneurial idea:

To maximize profits, give away 99% of your stuff for free, and charge a lot of money for 1% of your products or services.

Extreme is better (and more fun!)

It seems in life, just avoid the middle and the boring. Become more extreme, in a fun and friendly way!

Extreme aesthetics

Perhaps aesthetics and art is more fun and interesting when it is extreme. We disdain “middle tones”. We love the dynamic range of black and white.

Lesson:

When in doubt, be extreme!
