What do we Need as Photographers?

As photographers, what are we truly lacking, and what do we really need and desire?

My thought:

We are lacking the strength, motivation, or the wisdom to encourage ourselves to go out and shoot new photos, with extreme joy and delight.

1. We desire to embark on more photo adventures!

I believe there is a part of the human spirit which delights in adventure, danger, chaos, and having the opportunity to exercise our skills. The curse of modernity:

We are so comfortable and safe, yet we are dying of boredom and existential dread.

Solutions:

  1. Recognize that photography is less about the gear — more about adventuring.
  2. No guilt with going on photo adventures. Your photography and art creation is probably more important than work, job, and family life.
  3. Invest more of your money on experiences, not stuff.

2. Beauty in light and life.

We are hungry for beauty. The hunger for beauty in reality and life.

Therefore as photographer-artists, we are hungry for beauty. To witness it, to capture it, to create it.

Beauty is a tonic; something which strengthens our muscles, our hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future.

3. Desire for motivation

We are hungry for motivation to go out and make new photos. Many of us lack motivation to make new photos. Why? Perhaps exhaustion, a feeling of photographic or artistic nihilism (What’s the point if someone has already done it before me, and perhaps better than I can achieve?).

Thus, discovering photographic motivation — the motivation to make new images — this is what we truly need.
