The Designer as Philosopher

When you design things, you impute your personal aesthetics, ethics, and philosophy into your designs:

A realization:

There is no such thing as “good” or “bad” design. All design is simply a reflection of the philosophy of the designer, and what the designer believes is “best” for others.

For example Steve Jobs/Jony Ive and minimalist, beautiful, and simple-elegant design.

Even as I design HAPTIC products, it ultimately comes down to taste; my certain taste. My taste for the elegant, beautiful, yet unique. Functional and fashionable.

The design aesthetics include color, textures, materials, craftsmanship, quality control, and essentially what you consider as beautiful.

Great products for the masses

Something very interesting about Steve Jobs and his vision for Apple:

Make the most premium products, but make them for the masses.

The fascinating thing: no matter how poor you are (in America), you can still afford an iPhone. You can always buy a second hand iPhone (less than $200), and you can even buy new entry level iPhone for less than $500. You can buy a brand new iPad for $330. If this isn’t egalitarian and accessible, I don’t know what is.
