Streettogs Academy Assignment No. 3

3rd Assignment

Thank you again to everyone who participated in our 2nd Assignment and to everyone who is making Streettogs Academy Facebook Group a nice place to find good people and good photography.

I got to talk to Assignment #2 Editor’s Choice, Jomel Bartolome aka Dada Bear about the next topic. This one is something near and dear to his heart.

In 2012, there are about 2.2 Million Filipino Overseas Workers. They seek greener pastures overseas to insure their own personal future or that of their families. To an extent, it is a huge sacrifice that comes with a lot of anxieties such as adapting to a new culture, having a different work environment, and just plain and simply being away from your family.

For our Third Assignment, Jomel and I agreed that the topic should be this:

3rd Assignment-Foreigners

The easy approach in this assignment is to go to the nearest tourist trap in your area and photograph all the typical tourist you see but I encourage everyone to try and on a bigger challenge than that. Not that there is anything wrong with it but we want you to try and push the envelope on your own photography.

Try and capture the anxieties of being in a place away from home. Try to look for a story or get to know someone who you know is working in your country from overseas and snap a street portrait of them. Look for ways and spot the moments that will reflect someone who feels out of place or someone who is enjoying the place he/she is in drowning in the culture despite coming from a different place.

This will be a challenge on how you are going to make your photograph convey the emotion that Foreigners experience.

Here is a sample of what Jomel showed me in discussing his feelings about the topic:

This is going to be challenging assignment and I hope everyone gets to create something special with this assignment.

Here’s a quick recap of our mechanics:

  • Upload your photos interpreting the theme in the designated assignment album!
  • No words and captions, just your name, and place where you took the photo.
  • On the comment on your own photo, post a link to your site (flickr, tumblr, webpage etc.) so that your photo would easily appear on the group’s feed. (Please do it only once)
  • Feel free to use film, digital, instant film, mobile phones, etc. Any Camera will do
  • Keep the file appropriate for web viewing (at least 72 dpi), no need for hi-resolution.

Other things to know:

  • We encourage you to shoot during the duration of the 2 weeks instead of raiding your archives.
  • It should go without saying but please post photos that you own.
  • This assignment will run from August 20-September 3 2014
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions or clarifications in the group page.
  • Be open to learning, get up to the challenge, and of course have fun doing it!
At the end of the 2 weeks we will have an editor’s choice picked by Eric and myself and community’s choice which garners the most reactions from the community through likes and comments. We will feature the selections on a post here on the blog. The Winner of the editor’s choice, gets to pick the theme for the next assignment!
