The voting machines

First, on the landing page… The small white start here button in the center is not visible. Have the company to redesign to make it big, bright and red, perhaps with arrow sticking towards it, with a big vote here text in the center.

Redesign it so the next button is not in the bottom right corner, which is not visible. Position the next button in the center right of the screen, maybe make it yellow, so it is visible.

Even a better idea… Design it so when people select the candidate or measure, it automatically advances to the next screen. Then design undo or go back button, just in case they make a mistake.

If there is more than one thing to select, then give them the option to select more than one, and then add the next button.

The big problem is when the final ballot is printed out, people assume it is a receipt and try to take it home. Either just skip this stage, have it automatically print and cast at the same time, and maybe give it an option to review it one final time.

Redesign the screen so it could scroll like an iPad, having to click more at the bottom doesn’t make sense.

Saving time

At the Obama complex, there was only 25 machines, with a line to the parking lot. I was able to save hours of time by getting people to do the interactive sample ballot, and the way I got them to do. It was telling them that it would save them about an hour by the time they got to the machine.

Get rid of the acronyms, first time volunteers do not understand what “ISB” means. Spell it out in full, interactive sample ballot. Or better yet, call it a Mobile sample ballot.

It makes no sense that the quick check-in and the interactive sample ballot are two separate QR codes. Combine them so before they start the interactive sample ballot, they also start the quick check-in process. You do not want them to scan more than one QR code.

Print out large freestanding signs to get people to do the interactive sample ballot while they are waiting in line, having a volunteer individually tell about 100 people to do the interactive sample about is not scaleable. Have it say “save yourself an hour at the front by scanning this QR code and start to voting on your phone right now.”

Signs

If the complex has a voting center on the second story, it is not obvious that the people need to go upstairs. Either print out big signs that says that voting is upstairs, or encourage volunteers to use markers and tape to put up signs with arrows, pointing to where the actual voting spot is.

 Two lines?

Make one line for normal people, make one line for people over the age of 65 or who are handicapped in a wheelchair or cane. There was an issue in which the voting line went down the stairs, so it is not feasible for somebody in a wheelchair to wait in line because they cannot walk up the steps.
