How to Make More Artistic Street Photographs

What makes an “artistic” street photograph, and how can we make more artistic street photographs? Some thoughts:

What makes a street photograph more “artistic”?

First of all, it seems that artistic street photographs tend to be more surreal, obscured, silhouetted, simpler and bolder. In a very basic sense, I tend to think my monochrome street photos to be more “artistic” because they are more widely divorced from reality. The less “realistic” a photo seems, the more artistic it will feel.

An air of mystery

It also seems that more mysterious street photos feel more artistic. For example obscured faces, lost details in the shadows, or more overall mystery in the photos.
