‘Mixed’ sounds bad. Hybrid is good. Some thoughts:

Hybrid as a ‘mongrel’

Hybrida in Latin — not a nice compliment. It essentially means ‘mongrel‘ [a slur for a mixed person of uncertain origin]. ‘Mong‘ means mixed.

A class issue

In Ancient Rome, if you were a ‘hybrid’, you were essentially either:

• 1. Born of a free man + slave
• or
• 2. Born of a Roman father and a foreign mother

The romans cared about Rome above all. In some ways … to be Roman was your ‘race’. My theory still holds strong — I believe we Americans should believe in the ‘American Race‘ if we truly desire to squelch racism and all this other stuff.
