Why aren’t we encouraged to become ourselves?
Society says:
You are imperfect, bad, and you must become like x, y, z if you desire to become worthy, loved, and virtuous.
But a better goal:
Posit yourself as the ultimate goal. The goal is the maximal self-development of yourself.
