Ricoh GR III vs Ricoh GR II

A thought while walking:

I am so grateful that Ricoh made the GR 3. While there are lots of things I really loved about the GR 2 (embedded flash), the GR III is still superior.

Benefits of RICOH GR III:

Ricoh GR III is superior in these ways:

  1. High contrast black and white JPEG on GR3 is 1000x better than GR2. Insanely great dynamic range. The look is so beautiful. After GR 3 high contrast JPEG black and white mode, I don’t feel the need to shoot black and white film anymore. To me this is huge, because I really fell in love with trix400 pushed to 1600 in terms of the contrast, look and aesthetic, but hated the inconvenience and cost of black and white film. Thus, RICOH GR III has a great economic justification (only $890 — cheaper than processing 100 rolls of tri-x film).
  2. Size matters: The GR 3 is the best ‘pound for pound’ contender in the photography market. GR 3 as even smaller than GR2. Fits in your front pocket, always with you. Or if you use ERIC KIM NECK STRAP MARK II with GR3, the camera practically weighs nothing!
  3. Ricoh GR III positive film JPEG color preset is lovely — has more nuance. You can really feel the ‘slide film’ vibes on it. Haven’t shot too much of positive film JPEG GR3 yet, but will continue to experiment. GR2 positive film JPEG preset is nice and punchy and I love it as well, but GR3 seems to have taken the color science to the next level.
  4. Macro abilities of GR3 as superior to GR2: Macro mode on GR3 is insanely close! I have been able to photograph new things I haven’t been able to photograph before. Now, I truly feel like a scientist with a microscope (we are visual scientists).
