How to Shoot Abstract Photography

In terms of aesthetic, my favorite are abstract, simple, and open-ended images:

Why abstract images?

Abstract images are great because they require us to use our brain to interpret the images.

Furthermore, abstract images are open-ended. There is no right or wrong way to interpret them:

Shoot Monochrome

The first idea:

Abstract photography is easier with monochrome.

Why? Fewer moving components. Fewer variables.

Also, monochrome is inherently abstract. We don’t see the world in monochrome!

For example below observe some abstracted images I made from some of my favorite black and white images. Essentially I am trying to create a ‘visual gist‘ of my images (the overall sense and feeling of an image, not the 100% perfect representation).

How about abstract color photos?

I generally look for:

  1. Bold colors
  2. Add color and contrast in post-processing
  3. Shoot photos with a flash
  4. Simplify my composition to shapes, forms, and lines
