How I Photograph

How I shoot in real life:

1. Intense

I like creating intense photos. To me, “edgy” street photography is what fascinates me.

Street photographs which are difficult to shoot because it is scary to shoot. Fear of offending others.

The upside of shooting street photography with flash.

2. Surprising myself

I shoot a lot — photograph anything which I witness. Often I have no idea I have made a good photograph until far later.

For example, this photograph in Tokyo, while the elevator was closing the doors. The staff was bowing at me. I think this photograph is pure art:

3. Super-simple settings

I keep the settings super simple. Program mode, center-point autofocus, ISO 1600. I try to simplify the technical settings to the maximum, in order to focus on composing and shooting.

4. Engaging and talking with my subjects

When I am shooting street photography and talking to people (street portraits), I like to talk and engage with them! It is far more fun for me.

Conclusion: There is no right or wrong way to shoot photos

As a photographer and visual artist, your goal is to create art-works which you believe are authentic to you.

Thus, ignore what others are doing. Pay more attention to what YOU’RE doing!
