iPhone photography tips

Practical thoughts on why iPhone is the best camera:

Social commentary and critique

Document social street photography, by making photos of scenes and scenarios which upset or resonate with you. For example it upsets me when I see families all addicted to their phones, so I choose to document this in order to critique it.

Photograph colors, shadows, shapes and forms

Get your own foot or your own shadow in the shot!

Photograph engineering and mechanical things which interest you

Like the engine cockpit of an Audi R8:

Don’t drive; walk

Whenever possible walk. Walking more will allow you to witness more, and thus witness more things you’d like to photograph!

Just shoot it.

Indecision is the enemy. If you see something you find even marginally interesting, just shoot it!

Work the scene

Don’t just shoot 1 or 2 photos of the scene. Shoot a lot, and determine later which is your favorite image.

Also discover the best composition as you’re shooting it!

Go to the water

Photograph at the beach or bodies of water. One of the best ways to clear your mind and also to think philosophically.

Look up!

Often the most interesting photo moments are when you look up!

Disdain perfection

Perfection is boring.

Mix it up! Use a camera app like HUJI, and put on the random light leaks, scratches, dust marks, etc. I think what makes a beautiful photo is grit, texture, and imperfection.

Travel instead of thinking about buying a new phone

It seems the best use of our money is to buy experiences, not stuff. This means instead of spending $1000 on a new iPhone use that money to travel, buy photo books, or invest in experiences.
