The 10 Best Street Photography Blogs on the Web (and more)

by Eric Kim on July 22, 2011

Although street photography is still very much a niche online, here are the top 10 street photography blogs I regularly follow online. If you feel any other site needs to be added to this list, please leave a comment below!

1. Street Reverb Magazine

http://streetreverbmagazine.com/

Street Reverb Magazine was born out of the Hardcore Street Photography Flickr group and regularly hosts street photography interviews, essays, as well features. I love Street Reverb most for their interviews, which they are excellent at giving.

2. 85mm Street Blog

http://500px.com/85mm/blog

Thomas Leuthard (85mm) is one of the most passionate street photographers I know and really shares his insights and soul on his blog. He blogs quite frequently and addresses many practical questions that many street photographers have such as how to take street candids and what kind of excuses to use when shooting people. In a few weeks he is also going to release his free e-book on street photography–which will be posted to his website.

3. American Suburb X

http://www.americansuburbx.com/

Although American Suburb X brands themselves as more of a “photography and culture” magazine, they consistently have photo-essays and interviews with street photographers. If you look at any of their features, they are very well-written and long-format (something that a lot of sites no longer feature). Check out this great feature about Garry Winogrand here.

4. La Pura Vida Magazine

http://lpvmagazine.com/

La Pura Vida Magazine is an online and print magazine that dedicates itself to contemporary documentary and fine art photography and is lead by the prolific Brian Formhals. Brian has done a great deal with the site, and the man never sleeps (is an active moderator on the Hardcore Street Photography Flickr Group, Twitter, Street Reverb Magazine, and much more). Highly recommended.

5. Dirty Blog

http://dirtyharrry.blogspot.com/

I recently came upon the great flash street photography work by Dirty Harry and also found out that he curates an awesome street photography blog. On a very consistent basis, he finds the street photographs that he finds the most inspirational to him and posts it on his blog. Stay tuned for an interview with him on my blog soon :)

6. Leica Blog

http://blog.leica-camera.com/

Where would street photography be without Leica and rangefinders? Regardless, they feature many great interviews with street photographers on their blog and also keep us in the loop with what the masterminds at Leica are up to. Definitely keep them bookmarked.

7. B – Blake Andrews

http://blakeandrews.blogspot.com/

Out of all the street photography blogs I listed, “B” from Blake Andrews has definitely got to be my favorite. Sarcastic, rugged, and raw– Blake Andrews never sugarcoats anything he has to say that is on his mind. Not only that, but the man has a fantastic eye (he is in In-Public after all) and has great photo-analyses and essays. Here is one of my favorite articles on him on editing.

8. Seven Seven Nine – Nick Turpin

http://www.sevensevennine.com/

Nick Turpin is one of the anchors in the street photography community and has been working extremely hard in pushing street photography as a serious art in the community. He is also the founder of In-Public and has a fantastic eye when it comes to street photography. Although his blog Seven Seven Nine isn’t updated nearly as often as I’d like–it is still a treasure chest full of great information and insights.

9. Yanidel Street Photography – 80 Weeks Around the World

http://www.yanidel.net/

Yanidel is a passionate and extremely consistent street photographer from Paris who recently quit his job to travel the world for 80 weeks (the man has balls). I had the great pleasure of meeting with him when I was in Paris, and the guy not only loves street photography but blogging as well. Live vicariously through him and check out his blog!

10. JT in Seoul – Josh White

http://jtinseoul.wordpress.com/

Josh White is a street photographer that I stumbled upon a couple months back and even had an interview with him on my blog. He describes himself as a “law student on extended vacation in Korea” and is obsessed with documenting the streets of Seoul. Not only does he take great photographs, he also has a plethora of street photography gear (Leica M9, Leica X1, Fujifilm FinePix X100, Ricoh GRDIII, Ricoh GXR, etc) and gives great “real world” reviews. Peep him now!

11. Severin Koller

http://severinkoller.at/blog/

Severin Koller is a damn good street photographer and has been featured on the Leica blog recently. He hails from Vienna and looks like he is out and about doing street photography workshops with Chris Weeks all around the world right now. Check out his blog for his inspirational images.

12. Invisible Photographer Asia

http://invisiblephotographer.asia/

If you want a series of wonderfully curated fine art and street photography from Asia, Invisible Photographer Asia is the place. They have been only around for a year through the founding of Kevin WY Lee, but they have exploded in popularity and been getting a ton of great buzz lately. Oh yeah, and I’m a contributor there too ;)

13. Adam Marelli

http://www.adammarelliphoto.com/

Armed with a Leica and a passion for street photographer, Adam is always traveling and capturing memorable photographs from all around the world. Not only is he well trained in photography composition, but he also has a warm heart. Make sure to check out his site for traveling photo-essays and thoughts about street photography.

14. Danny Santos: Shooting Strangers in Orchard Road

http://www.dannyst.com/

Not only does Danny shoot fantastic street portraits of strangers in Singapore, he is also one of most inspirational guys I know. He has also inspired thousands of people out there to start their own “100 Strangers” project. Although he doesn’t update as often as I would like him (update it more often Danny!) but it is still a great resource to check out.

15. Burn Magazine

http://www.burnmagazine.org/

Curated by Magnum photographer David Allen Harvey, burn is is an evolving journal
for emerging photographers. All the images included are extremely well-curated, so you know every visit you make you will see some truly great images. Highly recommended for any serious street or journalist photographers out there.

And of course I’ll plug my own photos at http://www.daleypics.com/

  • Glenn Riffey

While I do like 85MM Street Blog, the one I regularly visit and read is Eric Kim Street Photography. It is not self serving for me to admit this. Your’s is the one blog I visit more than the rest. It is from your blog that I not only see and learn the aspects of street photography but you always bring up, like this post, other sites for us to visit as well. That would put yours at the top of my list.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

That means so much to me Glenn–thanks so much :)

  • http://silentxpression.wordpress.com/ Simon Wallerstedt

Nice to see Josh White and Severin Koller on the list! :)

  • John Daley
  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sepia-Prince/1816737124 Sepia Prince

Severin Koller is NICE with the camera! I really noticed his work AND approach in Chris Weeks’ documentary, using film and digital. And, of course, 85mm, using wit to spread his photographic wisdom. Also, unmentioned but featured in this blog, is the weekend photographer Danny Santos and his site http://www.dannyst.com.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Danny has a great blog–but he just has to update it more often ;) Will add it to the list!

      • Danny St

Ahaha thanks for adding me, Eric. And yes, I really should update more often :)

And thanks for the recommendation, Sepia :)

  • Andrew

I quite like http://www.shoottokyo.com Some great pics from an American guy who shoots with a Leica M9 in Tokyo every day.

  • JasonSMoore

I’m surprised you didn’t mention Steve Huff’s website.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Steve’s site is great for Leica + gear reviews, but wouldn’t say it is focused on street photography ;)

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/eschon/ ESchon

A good list, thanks for this.

Perhaps Digital Rev TV who speak about SP very often and who always test in the street (http://www.youtube.com/user/DigitalRevCom).

  • Rachel

Thanks for this list Eric, will check them out. I am curious as to why there isn’t any blogs here run by women? I’m interested to know if there are any good female street photographers :)

  • http://www.marcofiori.co.uk Marco Fiori

Certainly some crackers on there Eric!

  • Rick from Hong Kong

Eric, I added all these to my bookmarks. Thanks!

  • http://www.edwardmowinckel.com Edward Mowinckel

Danny Santos is the reason I got into photography in general. I’ve always held the belief that people aren’t what they wear, they’re not how much money they have in the bank, how big their house is, how fancy their car is, or their job. Street photography & portraiture take all of that way. We don’t know anything about these people, what school they go to, how much they make, what type of family they come from, or how many half baths their house has. We see a person, and that’s it. It humanizes them. Too often first world countries overlook the person, and instead see their material possessions. As a society, we need to get away from that.

I do candid street photography and street portraiture because it takes away the material world. It makes people, people.
