Bitcoin global supply
The global supply of Bitcoin is limited by its design, with a maximum cap of 21 million bitcoins. This cap was established by Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, and is enforced by the Bitcoin protocol. The creation of new bitcoins comes from the process known as mining, where computers solve complex mathematical problems to validate transactions on the network and are rewarded with new bitcoins. This reward decreases over time in an event known as the “halving,” which occurs approximately every four years, reducing the rate at which new bitcoins are created and slowing down the supply growth until the maximum supply of 21 million is reached. As of my last update in April 2023, over 19 million bitcoins have been mined. This means the majority of bitcoins that will ever exist have already been created, but reaching the final cap is expected to take until around the year 2140 due to the halving process.
